R1Soft CDP Server 2.0 Debuts
Houston, Texas – (The Hosting News) – September 27, 2007 – Developer of near-continuous data protection products for Linux and Windows, R1Soft’s CDP Server, has been upgraded to the next major version of the Continuous Data Protection product, with CDP Server 2.0.
The new release includes a variety of functional enhancements from previous versions of the product, and also introduces an array of new features not previously available. Namely, CDP Server 2.0 offers improved speeds when disk compression is enabled, Disk Safe Repair to cleanly recover archived data from server crashes or power failures, and performance improvements that allow users to run as many simultaneous backup tasks as their hardware can handle.
CDP Server 2.0 now includes email reporting features, allowing the server to automatically dispatch status reports via email directly to end users. The new version now comes standard with support for the ReiserFS file system and No More File System Indexing (Make File List) which means no more waiting for file system indexes to restore files. Files are available for restore as soon as the backup operation has completed.

To upgrade from previous versions of CDP Server, users need to download and execute the upgrade installer for version 2.0. The software will automatically update without the need for a clean installation of the new version.
Recently in August, R1 Soft announced that it now fully supports ReiserFS, a journaling file system and leading alternative to the standard Linux extended file system, known as ext2 or ext3. The company’s CDP Server has previously introduced support for an array of Linux distributions running on the Linux 2.4 Kernel or higher. Specifically supported distributions include Fedora Core; Debian Linux; CentOS Linux; OpenVZ; RedHat Enterprise; Virtuozzo; Ubuntu; and custom built vanilla or patched Linux 2.6 kernels. A beta Windows agent of the CDP Server is also available. R1Soft plans to introduce official support for Novell Suse and OpenSuse in the near future.
R1Soft’s CDP products diverge significantly from traditional backup technologies, which essentially copy files at intervals from hard disks to another medium, such as a tape drive. These methods often only provide data protection on a daily or weekly basis, resulting in large losses of data in the event of a disaster. R1Soft’s CDP Server, however, monitors changes to the disk as they happen, thereby reducing backup windows to seconds or minutes. It also affords even busy servers a significantly higher level of reliability in the event of a disaster, without the consumption of a large amount of system resources.
