Rackspace Engages Virtualization Hosting

San Antonio, Texas - (The Hosting News) - January 23, 2008 - Rackspace Managed Hosting, has begun a virtualization initiative, with its enterprise-class support of dedicated virtualized servers, as the newest service offering, designed to shift Rackspace to IT hosting.

Transforming traditional IT functions into consumable services via the web, is a mandate of Rackspace, as more enterprises transition from purchasing in-house computing assets to leveraging service providers, Rackspace now offers a suite of hosted IT services that are more reliable and provide better value, including virtualization, hosted mail, custom application support, back-end IT and storage.

John Engates, Chief Technology Officer, Rackspace noted, ”Our product development approach focuses first and foremost on Fanatical Support readiness. We also ask ‘Is the technology ready to use in a production environment?’ We believe that our new virtualization offering now meets these requirements and pushes the envelope, giving customers a virtualized environment ready for mission-critical applications, supported by our wealth of experience, expertise and Fanatical Support.”

Rackspace’s virtualization platform, built on VMware’s third-generation virtualization software suite, pushes virtualization to the next level in order to support mission-critical, production systems. Customers using virtualization can gain flexibility and scalability in their infrastructure, as well as simplified infrastructure management with new data protection options and on-demand provisioning. Additionally, server consolidation can be a benefit with the Rackspace virtualization offering.

Rackspace today has nearly 300 virtual machines under management, using the virtualization infrastructure for internal IT operations as well as Rackspace’s venture company infrastructures, Mosso cloud computing and Mailtrust hosted email solutions. Virtualization is a highly-complex technology, but Rackspace’s team of VMware Certified Engineers provides customers the technical expertise needed to design and leverage a virtualized system in the new era of provisioning, networking, monitoring, disaster recovery and more.

Ted Westerheide, of Consumer Intelligence at ShopLocal remarked, ”Our ShopLocal Index, which tracks the influence of the Internet on in-store shopping across major US retailers, grew by 60 percent this past holiday season compared to the year before. There are days, like Thanksgiving, when consumers look to us for in-store deals for the big shopping day (dubbed Black Friday) where we see traffic 30 times that of a normal day. While we serve millions of shoppers and over 100 retailers, we don’t want to disappoint one shopper or one retailer with a faulty website. Rackspace’s virtualization platform coupled with the predictive capabilities of the ShopLocal Index provides our company with a scalable architecture that seamlessly supports our busy shopping seasons, even when we see large, short-term spikes in traffic.”

Rackspace’s new virtualization platform will be based on dedicated physical hardware for each customer and will include the option of hybrid virtual and physical hosted environments. According to a recent Rackspace customer survey, 51 percent of customer respondents were not willing to share a physical server with other virtualization hosting customers, and only 13 percent were certain they were willing to share a physical server with other customers.

Mr. Engates added, ”Virtualization is still an evolving technology, and we believe this is just the beginning for Rackspace. Our RackLabs research and development department plans to continue to work with partners like VMware, Microsoft and XenSource to make generational leaps in the virtualization hosting arena. We expect future releases of Rackspace Virtualization Hosting to include enhanced disaster recovery, storage and scaling capabilities.”

A recognized global managed hosting firm, Rackspace Managed Hosting is a service organization delivering enterprise-level web infrastructure and managed services to businesses of all sizes. Telecom carriers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa such as KPN (The Netherlands), Swisscom (Switzerland), Telecom Italia, STA (Andorra Telecom), Portugal Telecom and Togo Telecom are using SWsoft products to add revenue by introducing hosting services and software as a service (SaaS) to their large base of small- and medium-size business customers.

Soeren von Varchmin, Managing Director for SWsoft’s European and Asian operations remarked, ”Telecoms and Internet service providers are increasingly becoming important players in the hosting business,” said “Many of these carriers were more recent entrants to the hosting market, but by employing new advanced technologies from SWsoft, hosting services and SaaS applications are easier to roll out on a larger scale.”

Small- and medium-size businesses are purchasing services from telecom carriers and ISPs that include shared web hosting, virtual private servers, hosted Exchange, hosted SharePoint and SaaS offerings. Many of the customers added these new services to their existing accounts.

Telecoms use SWsoft products to reduce the number of calls to customer service for routine tasks such as buying more disk space, adding e-mail accounts, installing sub-domains and installing new applications. SWsoft to Acquire Sphera SaaS

Herndon, Virginia - (The Hosting News) - September 24, 2007 - Virtualization software company, SWsoft, will merge with Sphera Corporation’s automation software business unit, through its acquisition of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions firm. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Sphera provides automation, provisioning, virtualization and management software for hosting companies, telecoms and enterprises. It has been a pioneer in developing SaaS and hosting solutions since its founding in 1999 and has partnerships with IBM, Microsoft and Mitsui. Leading telecom providers such as AT and T, Japan Telecom and Telecom Italia utilize Sphera’s platform to serve 150,000 businesses and more than one million end users with hosted applications.

Industry analyst IDC predicts that SaaS software revenues will reach $10.7 billion by 2009. Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft offered, ”We’re building a broader solution set and customer base as a technology provider — using a standards-based approach — to enable the delivery of SaaS by application developers and service providers. Through our three recent acquisitions, we estimate that we will be able to reach nearly 1.5 million additional business customers through our ISV and service provider partners.”

Under a SaaS model, software is accessed on demand and is made available to users over a network, typically the Internet, instead of as a ”boxed” product. The software programs are hosted by a service provider, with benefits that include automatic updates and easier administration, global accessibility, along with compatibility since all users have the same software — not different versions.

John Zanni, Managing Director of Worldwide Hosting in the communications sector at Microsoft Corp. commented, ”SWsoft and Sphera are two very important Microsoft industry partners. The combined company broadens not only the solution set, but also the customers and markets that Microsoft can reach.”

Melanie Posey, Research Director at IDC noted, ”This move is a good fit and positions SWsoft and Sphera to lead in the delivery of SaaS technology used by software developers and service providers that, in turn, can deliver software-as-a-service to their business customers.”

Michael Gold, the former CEO of Sphera, who will become General Manager at SWsoft’s SaaS company offered, ”With the full resources of SWsoft behind Sphera’s groundbreaking work and success in SaaS deployments, we will be able to expand more rapidly and on a greater scale.”

Using Sphera’s technology, service providers and their channel partners manage a portfolio of hosted SaaS applications that are bundled and sold to businesses. Also, Sphera helps ISVs transform traditional software programs to SaaS offerings with no additional application development. With some 50 employees, Sphera is headquartered in Denver with global offices in Tel-Aviv, Israel and Tokyo, Japan.

SWsoft Enhances Virtuozzo Beta

Herndon, Virginia - (The Hosting News) - September 17, 2007 - Virtualization software company, SWsoft, has debuted the beta version of its Virtuozzo 4.0 operating system (OS) software for data centers, recently demonstrated at VMworld in the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.

According to the company, SWsoft Virtuozzo is different from traditional hardware virtualization solutions in that it dynamically partitions a single Linux or Windows operating system instance into highly efficient and scalable virtual environments or ”containers.” Virtuozzo is the only virtualization solution that enables dozens to hundreds of containers to immediately and automatically leverage real hardware, resulting in exceptional datacenter efficiency from administrative, ROI, and energy-consumption perspectives.

Virtuozzo 4.0’s improved OS virtualization technology solves many of the common performance, density, usability and infrastructure compatibility issues that plague traditional hardware virtualization solutions via a number of improvements and new features, including:

• Enhanced Usability – A redesigned interface that offers access to centralized resources, such as easy-to-use application templates and sample containers, plus streamlined installation;
• High Availability – Virtuozzo 4.0 includes several new options to drive uptime, such as Red Hat and Windows Server 2003 clustering services, as well as real-time backups across Linux and Windows platforms;
• Complete Management Flexibility – Arrange and manage virtual containers and Virtuozzo servers according to either the actual hardware infrastructure, or logically group them according to user preference.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of 1 and 1 Internet remarked, ”We’ve used Virtuozzo since February 2006 to offer high-performance VPS solutions to thousands of customers, with only a minimal increase in real server resources. We’re looking forward to implementing Virtuozzo version 4 and making use of its new features to provide our customers with an even higher level of service.”

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft added, ”Virtuozzo 4.0 is a major step forward in our mission to provide customers with a solution that addresses multiple key barriers to service provider profitability - namely revenue per square foot, manageability and uptime. Integration with our complete line of automation, billing, and management solutions through our OPEN FUSION initiative makes Virtuozzo the most complete solution for service providers.”

Virtuozzo 4.0 will be available for public beta testing by the end of September, with general availability expected later this year. To sign up for the beta program, users can go to www.swsoft.com/virtuozzo4/beta. Current versions of Virtuozzo are available worldwide from SWsoft or any of its partners. A free, fully functional trial of Virtuozzo for Linux and Virtuozzo for Windows is available at www.swsoft.com/virtuozzo/trial.

SWsoft Powers Fat Jack Hosting

Suwanee, Georgia - (Website Hosting Directory) - September 10, 2007 - Web hosting company, Fat Jack Hosting (formerly Frontier Power Hosting) has completed a virtualization agreement with SWsoft server virtualization technology firm, to afford Fat Jack customers with the latest and most stable virtualization environment.

In addition, the SWsoft deployment will be a cost-effective solution for Fat Jack’s hosting customers. According to the company, for eight years, the web host provider has conducted an investigation process which revealed that SWsoft would be the best choice to provide its virtualization and automation software. Its product line includes Virtuozzo, the state of the art operating system virtualization solution. After exhaustive testing, the web host concluded that SWsoft’s suite of virtualization products met and exceeded other software’s capabilities.

Ralph Smith, Fat Jack Hosting Manager remarked, ”When dealing with SwSoft, we experienced none of the product issues we encountered with other virtualization providers. There was no pressure to purchase expensive partner hardware and SANS arrays, when what we already had in place was more than adequate. There was also no contending with promising but not enterprise-ready virtualization software like Xen. Like us, SWsoft had already proven itself a leader in the industry. The choice, therefore, was obvious.”

The greatest advantage of the SwSoft alliance, however, is that the technology is being deployed at about 25 percent of VMWare’s deployment cost. Those savings can, in turn, be passed on to Fat Jack Hosting’s clients. Built from the ground up, Fat Jack’s Virtualization 2007 minimizes outage issues, under loads its Web servers by 30 percent and employs its own team of virtualization specialists.

Recently, Fat Jack Hosting debuted its new Ground Floor Clustering Technology. Designed as a backup system technology, it is the same application used by Amazon, eBay and other top e-commerce sites. Its implementation is hoped to afford Fat Jack Hosting customers the highest online availability and performance. According to the company, Ground Floor Clustering Technology is the same expensive r backup system Amazon, eBay and other top sites use to maintain a high level of online availability and performance. From clustered storage arrays to specialized clustering hardware, Fat Jack Hosting’s entire hosting infrastructure is based off an industrialized design model.

According to a recent Harris Interactive poll, ”More than a third (35 percent) of U.S. adults who have personal/professional data and digital information stored on a PC or a laptop never back up their files, and a vast majority (76 percent) of those who do back up their files don’t do it often enough.” While this oversight can prove aggravating on a personal level, it can be downright devastating on a professional level.

Financial Report, Issued by SWsoft

Herndon, Virginia - (The Hosting News) - August 16, 2007 - Virtualization software company, SWsoft, has indicated that its revenues grew by 127 percent for the first half of 2007, versus the first half of 2006. In addition, the company reported that revenues from its virtualization products surged 312 percent from the first half of last year.

SWsoft is currently the world’s second-largest overall virtualization software company, leading desktop virtualization vendor and the only company to offer both virtual machine and OS virtualization technologies.

The company’s revenues related to consumers, SMBs and enterprises (excluding hosting providers) grew by a remarkable 487 percent over the same period and now represent 56 percent of the company’s total revenues (based on the past three months).

The sales growth reflects accelerating customer demand for SWsoft virtualization and automation technology. The company’s Parallels, Virtuozzo and other products now power more than 1.3 million virtual desktops and servers:

• More than 130,000 physical servers are currently powered by SWsoft products.
• More than 600,000 physical desktops and notebooks use Parallels software.
• More than 700,000 virtual environments (or containers) are powered by Virtuozzo.
• Nearly every Fortune 500 company uses Parallels virtual machine software.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft offered, ”These results are clear indications of the useful innovation and unique value that SWsoft products offer hundreds of thousands of customers every day. Our company is differentiated as the only one delivering both OS virtualization and virtual machine software, along with a suite of automation software. Rather than creating new software platforms, SWsoft is focused on enhancing existing operating systems and applications for the benefit of customers and other software vendors.”

SWsoft continued its aggressive product innovation during the last three months by shipping a new version of the Parallels Desktop software. The 3.0 version features SmartSelect, a Parallels-exclusive feature that allows users to open any file from Windows or OS X with any program from either OS. This function builds on Coherence, which lets Windows applications run like native Mac applications on OS X.

Also, SWsoft launched the Virtuozzo Starter Pack for Windows and Linux to enable new users to try out OS virtualization technology for a pilot deployment or small server consolidation project. The Virtuozzo Starter Pack is a turn-key offering of software and support and is priced at $1,198.

The company unveiled an alpha build of Parallels Server, which runs bare-metal as well as on top of Windows, Linux or OS X server. The product, scheduled for introduction later in 2007, will give businesses the flexibility to run multiple server operating systems on a single physical server.

With the introduction of the Application Packaging Standard, SWsoft made headway towards creating a software-as-a-service (SaaS) integration platform. SWsoft PEM 2.6.3, SWsoft Plesk 8.2 and SWsoft Sitebuilder 4.0 upgrades were introduced to help extend the company’s role as a leader in data center automation.

SWsoft was honored for excellence by several top organizations, including the Itanium Solutions Alliance and CRN Magazine, which named the company one of the ”25 ISVs You Must Know.” SWsoft products also won numerous prestigious awards, including being named #6 on PC World’s ”100 Best Products of 2007” list and one of CRN’s ”10 Coolest Products of the Year,” and winner of MacWorld UK’s ”Best OS X Software of 2007” award.

New or expanded SWsoft partnerships were announced with: 1 and 1 Internet, Arc Technology, CCMedia, Concergent, Consistent Computer Bargains, FORPSI, FreshBooks, GAUZY, IBM, IGNUM, Internet Fr, Kaspersky, Microsoft, Objectronix, Prox System Design, Ready Informatica, Roaring Penguin, ShopSite, Smart Online, Softbank IDC, Shinjiru.com, and Tech Data.

Virtualization Survey, from Rackspace

San Antonio, Texas - (The Hosting News) - August 15, 2007 - Virtualization is poised to support mission-critical applications, according to a recent customer survey conducted by managed hosting provider Rackspace Managed Hosting, revealing that 57 percent of respondents are already using virtualization for internal applications.

In addition, 72 percent of respondents are comfortable hosting mission-critical applications in a production environment on a virtualized platform. There is a great demand for leveraging the benefit of virtualization through a third-party hosting company: 71 percent of respondents would host their applications on a virtualized infrastructure with a hosting provider. However, the majority of customers are currently not comfortable utilizing a shared, virtual environment. Only 13 percent of respondents are confidently willing to share a physical server with other hosting customers, a practice common in hosting, with top concerns stemming from performance and security vulnerabilities in shared environments.

Nicolas Keller, Director of Platform Products at Rackspace Managed Hosting offered, ”Virtualization is making significant traction in the market; however, it is still a maturing technology. This is where Rackspace can fill in the gap by applying Fanatical Support to a solution that people are comfortable with and that will provide peace of mind in areas like performance and security. The first phase of virtualization has focused on cost savings from server consolidation, but the next phase will be about infrastructure management to improve flexibility and scalability. Hosting providers and utility players, like Rackspace, that manage tens-of-thousands of customer servers, need to deliver a virtualization platform that provides fast provisioning and infrastructure agility for our customers.”

Rackspace plans to unveil a virtualization offering, which is currently in the beta process, to address the management of large-scale implementations. It will address the needs and concerns that have been revealed through this customer survey.

Mr. Keller continued, ”We’ve been researching virtualization for a while now and wanted to make sure that our customers are ready, that the market is ready and most importantly that our offering is Fanatical Support-ready. We are working thoroughly to ensure the management, high availability, performance and security pieces of our virtualization offering are in line for a successful launch by the end of this year.”

Additionally, the Rackspace survey revealed that 42 percent of respondents believe virtualization will have a fundamental impact on information technology. Although 43 percent had no preference between using open source or proprietary virtualization products, the majority of respondents use VMware. The methodology for this research involved sending an email survey to approximately 3,000 Rackspace customers. More than 12 percent of survey recipients responded to the questions.

SWsoft Virtualization, Supports Green Power

Herndon, Virginia - (The Hosting News) - August 14, 2007 - As electric power costs soar, and increasing pressure to reduce energy consumption continues, SWsoft has been included by a growing number of service providers and IT organizations worldwide, for its Virtuozzo virtualization software, in the effort to ”go green” and become more conscious of electricity usage.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft remarked, ”Virtuozzo delivers the highest density available in a virtualization solution, enabling hundreds of virtual environments on a single physical server, and so it offers the greatest potential for energy savings. By using Virtuozzo to achieve their green computing goals, hosting providers can significantly reduce their energy usage while also realizing greater efficiency in their datacenter.”

Hosting companies consume a large amount of computing resources, running data centers with thousands of servers to provide companies with web sites, hosted applications and software-as-a-service (SaaS). A 50,000-square-foot data center uses approximately 4 megawatts of power, the equivalent of 57 barrels of oil a day. According to Gartner Research, energy costs could soon account for more than 50 percent of the total information technology budget for a typical data center. (Gartner Press Release, Gartner Urges IT and Business Leaders to Wake up to IT’s Energy Crisis, September 28, 2006).

SWsoft Virtuozzo operating system virtualization software uses patented technology to create multiple, isolated virtual environments - or virtual private servers - on a single physical server and operating system, making the most efficient use of hardware, software and other resources. Each virtual environment has the same performance and functionality as a stand-alone server.

Some of the ways that SWsoft may realize the green potential of virtualization with Virtuozzo, include:

• ServInt Internet Services (www.servint.net), a leading hosting company based in the United States, estimates that their green efforts have produced a savings of as much as 85 percent in electricity usage for every hosted customer that transitions from a single physical server to a virtual server.

• Host Europe (www.hosteurope.de), a large hosting company based in Germany, estimates that their virtualized hosting customers use 63 percent less electric power.

• ikoula (www.ikoula.com), a hosting company based in France, estimates they can save as much as 60 percent on electricity by moving customers from dedicated to virtualized servers. The reduced power consumption also means delaying additional infrastructure investment to provide more power or space.

Christian Dawson, Vice President of Operations at ServInt Internet Services offered, ”Going green is just smart business – for our customers and for us – because in addition to helping the environment, it helps the bottom line. We are pleased with the energy reductions we’ve seen through virtualization and other initiatives and we think there are further energy and cost savings to be had by going green. Virtualization with SWsoft Virtuozzo is integral to achieving our long-term goals.”
