Hosted Spam Solution, at Rackspace

Blacksburg, Virginia - (Website Hosting Directory) - June 3, 2008 - Managed web hosting and IT services firm, Rackspace Managed Hosting’s Mailtrust solution, has deployed the Cloudmark Authority for Spam Protection.

Over 100,000 business hosting customers utilize Mailtrust, which has deployed the Cloudmark Authority plug-in for Apache SpamAssassin to improve message filtering accuracy and boost system performance. Cloudmark’s comprehensive message filtering solution, combined with Mailtrust’s proven hosted business-class e-mail services, gives demanding business customers unmatched messaging capabilities, higher e-mail service quality and a markedly improved user experience.

Pat Matthews, President of Mailtrust noted, ”Mailtrust’s mission is to be the best hosted business-class e-mail provider and partnering with Cloudmark furthers this goal. With spam making up more than 95 percent of all e-mail traffic, it is important for us to provide our customers with a reliable solution that stops unwanted e-mail traffic before it impacts internal messaging infrastructure and storage. Also, Cloudmark’s automatic threat protection has enabled us to refocus engineering and administrative resources away from maintenance issues in order to be able to focus more on our customers’ needs.”

After evaluating several solutions, Mailtrust selected the Cloudmark Authority plug-in for Apache SpamAssassin because of the following: — Improved Filtering Accuracy — Cloudmark rapidly detects all categories of spam and phishing with more than 98 percent accuracy and near zero false positives. High accuracy is maintained by an in-memory cache of the latest threat fingerprints, which is updated by Cloudmark every 30-60 seconds. — Fingerprinting Technology and Real-time Feedback — Cloudmark combines Advanced Message Fingerprinting with real-time reporting from a network of more than 600 million trusted reporters around the world. Mailtrust’s customers join Cloudmark’s Global Threat Network and are empowered to report any unwanted message reaching their inbox. This unique combination of technology and user reporting enables Cloudmark to detect new threat outbreaks hours or days ahead of competitive solutions. — Reduced Server Load, CPU Usage and Power Consumption — Cloudmark’s fingerprinting technology requires significantly less computing resources than alternative filtering solutions. With Cloudmark, Mailtrust was able to cut the number of filtering servers it used by 50 percent. Savings on spam filtering infrastructure, power consumption and administration are passed on to customers in the form of improved service and lower service charges.

Cloudmark also integrates seamlessly with Mailtrust’s new integrated control panel, which allows customers to control both Exchange and Noteworthy e-mail services from one central location. Users can now also manage their Cloudmark spam settings through Mailtrust’s new control panel, thereby enabling a single domain with both types of mailboxes and one shared set of spam controls.

Jamie de Guerre, Chief Technology Officer of Cloudmark remarked, ”The Cloudmark Authority plug-in for SpamAssassin offers a seamless way for e-mail hosting companies like Mailtrust to benefit from greatly improved filtering accuracy and performance without having to change their system architecture. Mailtrust is known in the hosting industry as an innovator and a leader in customer satisfaction. We look forward to working with Mailtrust to help deliver on its promise of providing the most secure, reliable and cost-effective business e-mail service in the market today.”

Cloudmark Authority is an out-of-the box solution, which integrates with virtually any Apache SpamAssassin environment. Like Apache SpamAssassin, Cloudmark Authority is compatible with a wide variety of e-mail systems, including procmail, sendmail, Postfix, qmail and many others. Already in use at more than 100 of the world’s largest service providers and mobile operator networks, Cloudmark Authority is uniquely architected to block spam, phishing and virus threats on virtually any communications platform. Backed by a unique and powerful combination of Advanced Message Fingerprinting and real-time feedback from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network, Cloudmark Authority is able to rapidly detect even the most advanced messaging threats, including mutating spam and phishing attacks.

Mailtrust, a division of Rackspace, provides more than 100,000 small, medium, and geographically dispersed companies with business-class email hosting. Lanham Napier, President and CEO, Rackspace noted, ”Rackspace has been focused on Fanatical Support® since the beginning - it’s in our DNA - and our new identity reflects that. Now we see the industry shifting to a service-based paradigm. Fanatical Support has been the key to our managed hosting success for the past nine years and will continue to propel us as we embark upon this new era of IT hosting.”

As more enterprises transition from purchasing in-house computing assets to leveraging service providers, Rackspace now offers a suite of hosted IT services that are more reliable and provide better value, including virtualization, hosted mail, custom application support, back-end IT and storage.

Rackspace is moving beyond the historical hardware focus of the web hosting industry and towards a services strategy, assembling the best technologies in the industry and delivering them as a service. Fanatical Support has always been the key differentiator for Rackspace, but through the strategy shift, service will be accentuated even more.

Daniel Golding, Vice President and Research Director, Tier 1 Research noted, ”As the IT hosting sector evolves, it is becoming that the true competitive differentiator is customer support. As the very idea of IT hosting makes the leap into enterprise adoption, those firms that can offer truly outstanding support will come out on top.”

Mr. Napier added, ”As Rackspace leads the industry’s transition to hosted services, we will build upon our core managed hosting business and Fanatical Support. Our new services will compliment our existing portfolio allowing customers to easily offload more and more IT functions to Rackspace.”

Webmail.us at Rackspace, Now Mailtrust

Blacksburg, Virginia - (Website Hosting Directory) - January 24, 2008 - Business-class email hosting specialist and the mail division of Rackspace, Webmail.us, LLC, has issued a corporate brand change from Webmail to Mailtrust, as it continues to provide business-class email hosting for over 85,000 businesses worldwide.

Pat Matthews, President of Mailtrust noted, ”Because email is so mission-critical, trust is crucial in choosing your email provider. We wanted a name that would reflect that. The new name aligns our corporate mission with our reputation as a trusted email provider. We understand how serious it is to give control of such a mission-critical operation such as email to an outside vendor. Mailtrust indicates our dedication to becoming the world’s most trusted provider of business email hosting.”

The choice of the Mailtrust brand is a direct result of feedback from the company’s extensive customer base, who indicated that the most important reason for choosing Mailtrust as their email hosting provider was ”trust.” The name Mailtrust also highlights business-class email as the core of the company’s service offering and its focus to be the mail specialist that businesses can trust.

In addition to the new company brand, Mailtrust announced the addition of Managed Microsoft Exchange Hosting to its product portfolio. Microsoft Exchange is viewed by many as the corporate email standard and was a natural addition to Mailtrust’s product line. With the addition of Managed Microsoft Exchange to Mailtrust’s flagship Noteworthy® email hosting service, customers now have a choice of platforms depending on their size, functionality and budgetary needs. Businesses currently running Microsoft Exchange in-house can now offload their corporate email systems to Mailtrust and refocus their IT resources more strategically, without having to alter the user experience for their employees or move to a completely different platform.

Philbert Shih, research analyst for Tier1 Research, a division of The 451 Group noted, ”A dual mail offering of Managed Microsoft Exchange and Mailtrust’s own Noteworthy brand is a strong step forward for the company. Offering a choice between the Noteworthy and Managed Microsoft Exchange platforms is a strong selling point that should facilitate new customer acquisition and position Mailtrust for further growth as demand for collaborative and mobile messaging solutions accelerates.”

Although the company is changing its brand name, Mailtrust will continue to strive to deliver the industry’s premier business-class email services for organizations around the world. As part of the change, Mailtrust will launch a new website that better reflects the company’s mission and brand.

Mailtrust, a Rackspace company, provides more than 85,000 small, medium, and geographically dispersed companies with business-class email hosting. The company manages and maintains the email service and hosting infrastructure, freeing up IT resources and eliminating the need for customers to purchase email-related hardware, software, and security services, at rates designed to be at a fraction of the cost of purchasing and managing email services in-house. Founded in 1999, and acquired by Rackspace in 2007, Mailtrust is headquartered in Blacksburg, Virginia and was recently named the 217th fastest growing, privately held company in America by Inc. Magazine.

Rackspace Engages Virtualization Hosting

San Antonio, Texas - (The Hosting News) - January 23, 2008 - Rackspace Managed Hosting, has begun a virtualization initiative, with its enterprise-class support of dedicated virtualized servers, as the newest service offering, designed to shift Rackspace to IT hosting.

Transforming traditional IT functions into consumable services via the web, is a mandate of Rackspace, as more enterprises transition from purchasing in-house computing assets to leveraging service providers, Rackspace now offers a suite of hosted IT services that are more reliable and provide better value, including virtualization, hosted mail, custom application support, back-end IT and storage.

John Engates, Chief Technology Officer, Rackspace noted, ”Our product development approach focuses first and foremost on Fanatical Support readiness. We also ask ‘Is the technology ready to use in a production environment?’ We believe that our new virtualization offering now meets these requirements and pushes the envelope, giving customers a virtualized environment ready for mission-critical applications, supported by our wealth of experience, expertise and Fanatical Support.”

Rackspace’s virtualization platform, built on VMware’s third-generation virtualization software suite, pushes virtualization to the next level in order to support mission-critical, production systems. Customers using virtualization can gain flexibility and scalability in their infrastructure, as well as simplified infrastructure management with new data protection options and on-demand provisioning. Additionally, server consolidation can be a benefit with the Rackspace virtualization offering.

Rackspace today has nearly 300 virtual machines under management, using the virtualization infrastructure for internal IT operations as well as Rackspace’s venture company infrastructures, Mosso cloud computing and Mailtrust hosted email solutions. Virtualization is a highly-complex technology, but Rackspace’s team of VMware Certified Engineers provides customers the technical expertise needed to design and leverage a virtualized system in the new era of provisioning, networking, monitoring, disaster recovery and more.

Ted Westerheide, of Consumer Intelligence at ShopLocal remarked, ”Our ShopLocal Index, which tracks the influence of the Internet on in-store shopping across major US retailers, grew by 60 percent this past holiday season compared to the year before. There are days, like Thanksgiving, when consumers look to us for in-store deals for the big shopping day (dubbed Black Friday) where we see traffic 30 times that of a normal day. While we serve millions of shoppers and over 100 retailers, we don’t want to disappoint one shopper or one retailer with a faulty website. Rackspace’s virtualization platform coupled with the predictive capabilities of the ShopLocal Index provides our company with a scalable architecture that seamlessly supports our busy shopping seasons, even when we see large, short-term spikes in traffic.”

Rackspace’s new virtualization platform will be based on dedicated physical hardware for each customer and will include the option of hybrid virtual and physical hosted environments. According to a recent Rackspace customer survey, 51 percent of customer respondents were not willing to share a physical server with other virtualization hosting customers, and only 13 percent were certain they were willing to share a physical server with other customers.

Mr. Engates added, ”Virtualization is still an evolving technology, and we believe this is just the beginning for Rackspace. Our RackLabs research and development department plans to continue to work with partners like VMware, Microsoft and XenSource to make generational leaps in the virtualization hosting arena. We expect future releases of Rackspace Virtualization Hosting to include enhanced disaster recovery, storage and scaling capabilities.”
