Ft. Lauderdale, Florida - (The Hosting News) - January 7, 2008 - Web hosting company specializing in small and medium business support, Hostopia, has developed and launched the release of its newest wireless mobility data synchronization application, SyncJe for Palm OS.

Developed by Nexthaus, Hostopia’s wireless mobility technology unit, the Palm OS client further extends Nexthaus’s line of SyncSuite applications that include SyncJe for Blackberry, iPhone, Outlook, Outlook Express, and Lotus Notes. SyncJe for Palm OS allows users to wirelessly synchronize data between their Palm OS devices, desktop or mobile computers, and Internet applications such as web-based email.

The application installs directly onto Palm OS devices, enabling centrally stored Personal Information Management (PIM) data to be exchanged wirelessly. Users can ‘’sync” contacts, calendars, notes and tasks free from any device cradles or wires and can even set an automatic synchronization scheduler. SyncJe is compatible with any SyncML server and comes with one year of maintenance and support.

Paul D. Engels, Chief Marketing Officer at Hostopia remarked, ”Businesses and consumers are increasingly demanding greater functionality and productivity from their email services and mobility devices. SyncJe for Palm OS helps link otherwise unconnected devices with the ease and power of wireless connectivity. The introduction of the Nexthaus Reseller Program allows VARs, systems integrators and telecommunication/mobility services professionals to directly market SyncJe software from their websites and receive referral commissions from Nexthaus.

All Nexthaus Resellers get secure access to a reseller program administration interface allowing them to track their sales and program earnings. SyncJe products can be purchased individually for $29.95, or bundled with SyncJe for Outlook, for $59.95.

Dirk Bhagat, Chief Technology Officer at Hostopia added, ”SyncJe for Palm OS adds another significant component to our comprehensive line-up of data synchronization applications: Nexthaus SyncSuite. Full compatibility with Oracle’s Collaboration Suite has made these client applications very attractive to large enterprises. We believe that the ability to fully sync one’s PIM data across multiple devices and platforms at a low client software price represents compelling value to business people, or consumers, looking to get more from their mobility device. Combined with our other SyncJe clients for Blackberry, iPhone, and Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express, we believe we now cover the most popular devices and email clients on the market.”

Self-Management for Data Centers, by 3Tera

Aliso Viejo, California - (The Hosting News) - November 9, 2007 - Utility and grid computing solutions firm, 3Tera, Inc., has released the alpha version of a new concept in data center operations. Dynamic Appliances was developed to extend the firm’s simplification mandate of operations, so that elements can be configured for self-management.

Dynamic Appliances are packaged data center operations like backup, migration or SLAs that users can add to their applications to provide functionality. Unlike traditional data center management systems that require months to deploy and numerous system administrators to maintain, Dynamic Appliances allow data center operations to be easily and directly embedded into distributed applications simply by dragging and dropping them into the application, where the decision rules for operation are simplest to define and maintain. The application thereby gains the ability to perform that operation for itself, even when moved to another data center.

Peter Nickolov, President and CTO, 3Tera noted, ”Dynamic Appliances make complex data center operations like backups, SLAs, disaster recovery, that till now were performed only for mission critical applications, available and affordable to all applications. Because they are so easy to adopt and maintain by any AppLogic user, Dynamic Appliances provide a very efficient way to cut time consuming and expensive operations for many Web 2.0 or SaaS providers.”

Dynamic Appliances work by leveraging the ability of 3Tera’s AppLogic grid operating system to package distributed applications into manageable entities. For instance, the Backup Dynamic Appliance, which is used to backup an application to an offsite service, doesn’t require configuration with lists of files or firewall rules because it can simply issue commands to AppLogic to perform operations on entire distributed applications.

Bert Armijo, Senior Vice President, Sales and Product Management, 3Tera offered, ”One of the biggest advantages of utility computing is the reduction in labor required to deploy, maintain and scale applications. To accomplish this, we focus on driving manageability down into the applications, making them self-manageable. This is a very powerful way to deal with operations, because at the application level, most management issues are small and can be handled with just a few properties.”

3Tera’s Dynamic Appliances are now available as alpha release to all AppLogic users at no additional cost. Initially Backup and Migration Dynamic Appliances be available. The SLA, Disaster Recovery, Patch Management and Power Saver appliances will be rolled out during the alpha. Prospective users can find more information at www.3tera.com/dynamic-appliances.html.

Earlier this year, 3Tera’s new AppLogic 2.1 release, was developed to add Application Monitoring and Multi-CPU scalability to the commercial platform designed to enable true utility computing for SaaS and Web 2.0 companies. The availability of the new application, was announced at the Office 2.0 Conference in San Francisco, California. The new 2.1 release of the AppLogic grid operating system endeavors to provide greater scalability, improved resource utilization, visibility and control over application performance.

3Tera, Inc. is a grid and utility computing firm for the deployment and scaling of web applications. Named a 2007 Category Breaker by NetworkWorld magazine, 3Tera’s AppLogic grid operating system enables the first true utility computing services that completely remove the cost and complexity associated with infrastructure. The operating system converts commodity servers into scalable grids on which users can visually operate deploy and scale transactional web applications without any modification of code. Software-as-a-Service providers, Web 2.0 companies, enterprises and open source developers may obtain new online services, to market by utilizing resources from commodity hosting providers on a pay-as-you-go basis, while maintaining complete control of applications including visual operation, scaling and on-demand resource provisioning using only a browser.

1&1 Internet Debuts SWsoft SaaS

Herndon, Virginia - (The Hosting News) - June 19, 2007 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, has implemented SWsoft’s new Application Packaging Standard (APS), designed to enable software vendors to integrate applications into hosting environments, to deliver software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions.

1 and 1 assisted SWsoft with the design requirements for hosting providers, and is the first service provider to implement support for the APS standard in its Click-n-Build web hosting platform. SWsoft introduced the APS standard to the software development community in March. The standard will help hosting providers take advantage of SaaS and offer customers a greater variety of services. It will also help open the hosting channel for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) by allowing them to deliver hosted applications to more end users.

SWsoft also announced an APS certification program for ISVs and will soon be announcing a certification program for hosting providers. By advancing a certification program and an APS-compliant hosting platform, SWsoft and 1 and 1 hope to grow the emerging market for hosted SaaS applications. Industry analyst IDC predicts SaaS software revenues will reach $10.7 billion by 2009. (a)

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of the Board, 1 and 1 Internet Inc. remarked, ”APS will provide a sizeable new business opportunity for 1 and 1 and for the entire web hosting and software industries worldwide. The standard is open to everyone and will provide exciting new sales channels for hosting providers as well as other Internet service providers (ISPs). Our customers and ISVs will benefit from the expected growth of new APS-compliant applications.”

The APS standard defines a packaging format that provides software vendors with a specification to create ”pluggable” applications that require no additional integration by service providers utilizing an APS-compliant control panel, such as 1 and 1 Click-n-Build, SWsoft Plesk and SWsoft PEM.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of SWsoft commented, ”Hosting providers are an ideal delivery channel for SaaS with ISVs as another essential ingredient. We developed an open, flexible, easy to implement standard to help advance the adoption of SaaS solutions for the benefit of end users.”

The APS certification program provides ISVs with basic and advanced certification criteria. The program offers two levels of certification: ”Silver” (works with APS) and ”Gold” (designed for APS).

1 and 1 is offering Click-n-Build — a certified APS control panel — bundled with its U.S. web hosting packages. APS platforms from 1 and 1 will be available in Europe in the second half of 2007. APS is available for free at www.apsstandard.com.

The APS standard will be supported in upcoming releases of SWsoft Plesk control panel, as well as SWsoft PEM data center automation software.

1 and 1 Internet’s global community includes 5.87 million users. 1 and 1 features an array of services, from instant domain packages to all-inclusive shared hosting plans, dedicated servers and ready-to-run eShops. Combining over 37,000 fully-tuned servers with the performance of Juniper and Cisco routers, 1 and 1 endeavors to utilize the most superior products from the leading technology manufacturers and service providers. 1 and 1 is a Microsoft Joint Development Partner, and works with other paramount companies such as Google, Plesk, Symantec, and HP/Compaq.

SWsoft’s automation software lineup has expanded, with new product introductions, extending the company’s data center automation presence. PEM, the company’s data center automation solution for service providers added support for Blackberry and Good Technologies that gives service providers the ability to offer hosted e-mail solutions to their customers. Also, the company partnered with MIVA Small Business Solutions, Inc. to deliver easy e-commerce capabilities as part of the SWsoft Plesk control panel solution for service providers.

Founded in 1999, SWsoft is a recognized leader in server automation and virtualization software. With more than 10,000 customers in over 100 countries, SWsoft’s suite of products delivers proven performance, reliability, manageability and value. With offices around the world; SWsoft is a high growth company, funded by Bessemer Venture Partners, Insight Venture Partners and Intel Capital, offering comprehensive solutions – transparently integrated through the OPEN FUSION Initiative - including Virtuozzo, Plesk, SiteBuilder, HSPcomplete and PEM.

Small Business T1 Service, from Covad

San Jose, California - (The Hosting News) - May 22, 2007 - Web host and national provider of integrated voice and data communications firm, Covad Communications Group, Inc., has unveiled its new Bonded T1 Service for Small Businesses and Distributed Enterprises, including mission critical bandwidth and advanced applications.

The new service combines two 1.5 Megabits per second (Mbps) T1 lines together to serve businesses with fast, symmetrical 3.0 Mbps data speeds. The service is available nationwide throughout the same footprint as Covad’s standard T1 service.

Eric Weiss, Covad Chief Marketing Officer remarked, ”With the launch of Bonded T1, Covad enhances its ability to provide mission critical bandwidth to meet the demands of businesses running new and advanced applications. With Bonded T1, Covad customers enjoy lower costs, faster data speeds, and simpler installation and maintenance than they do with separate T1 lines. We also provide 24×7, dedicated support to ensure a superior customer experience.”

Atlanta-based Post Properties is a current Covad T1 customer requiring more bandwidth to conduct its business. Bill Nesmith, IT Manager for Post Properties commented, ”We have been a Covad customer for six years and wanted to augment our T1 service in order to run more complex applications. These applications support essential business functions, such as: forecasting and budgeting, accounts payable, lease tracking, and running virtual tours of properties over our website. We are upgrading our service to Bonded T1 and look forward to continuing our relationship with Covad.”

In addition to providing increased bandwidth performance, Covad Bonded T1 also offers small businesses the opportunity to save money by reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of their data communications. For example, a typical small business customer with 40 employees working in a single location can reduce its TCO by over 20 percent by purchasing a Covad Bonded T1 instead of just adding another single T1. With the introduction of Bonded T1, Covad also continues to be the easy to do business with provider, enabling customers to reduce administrative and technical expenses, and retain a simple infrastructure with one set of IP addresses, one Internet access point, and one network firewall.

Companies are increasingly turning to higher bandwidth services to meet their business needs, according to industry research firm In-Stat. Covad’s launch of Bonded T1 demonstrates its understanding of the evolving needs of the small business communications market, where the company is among the leaders in competitive solutions, said David Lemelin, In-Stat senior analyst. The trends behind this adoption include:

  • Applications increasingly require higher bandwidth. These include: videoconferencing, e-learning, telemedicine, corporate intranet/extranet, premium CRM, and others. These more powerful mission-critical applications help businesses make fast intelligent decisions on virtually every aspect of their operations, including forecasting, manufacturing, inventory control, distribution, customer service, and more.
  • More applications are being centralized with the growth of software as a service. Remote and branch offices need bandwidth to ensure adequate application performance to maintain productivity.
  • More applications are being designed for web access and encrypted to reduce client software support cost. The web browser is now the standardized interface to a new generation of business applications. Browser based applications can utilize up to 5 times the bandwidth of typical client-server applications. More encryption is adding traffic overhead.
  • Outsourcing (i.e. data storage, HR, IT support) via the Internet.
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, and Basel II increases the amount and rate of data transfers.

Covad’s Bonded T1 is made possible through recent upgrades to Covad’s next-generation broadband network and is available through Covad and its network of distribution partners. Call 1-888-GO-COVAD or contact your Covad channel partner to take advantage of introductory pricing on Bonded T1 services.

A nationwide provider of integrated voice and data communications, Covad offers DSL, Voice Over IP, T1, web hosting, managed security, IP and dial-up, wireless broadband, and bundled voice and data services directly through Covad’s network and through Internet Service Providers, value-added resellers, telecommunications carriers and affinity groups to small and medium-sized businesses and home users. According to the company, as the first company to commercially deploy DSL in the United States, Covad has spent hundreds of millions of dollars building a network that passes more than 57 million homes and businesses in 44 states - the largest nationwide footprint of any DSL company. Covad broadband services are currently available across the nation in 235 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) which represent over 50 percent of all US homes and businesses.
