1&1 Internet Image Study Released

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - July 31, 2008 - 1 and 1 Internet, web hosting firm, has indicated that 77 percent of Americans, are concerned about online image, through a web image study recently released.

According to the research conducted, 3 in 4 Americans admit to judging others solely based on their online material, yet 27 percent regret posting material online. Personal websites offer a more accurate and controlled online image.

Oliver Mauss, CEO of 1 and 1 Internet Inc. noted, ”Americans clearly recognize the growing role of online image. As the Internet continues to become a common method of posting and searching about people, it is becoming increasingly important for individuals to manage how they are represented online. Controlling the material published is crucial; therefore having your own website is a secure way to manage your online identity.”

The personal material placed on the Internet refers to data such as blogs, photos, and Facebook profiles. A survey of 1,006 US consumers also found that 27 percent have regretted posting material about themselves online, yet 76 percent of Americans admit to judging individuals solely based on their material online. Over half (58 percent) of Americans now routinely ‘Google’ new people they meet.

Another survey of 700 people who publish their own personal website(2), as opposed to just social networking, found that 85 percent believed this offered more control over their online image, and 77 percent saw their website as providing a better impression than social networks such as MySpace or Facebook.

The ‘1 and 1 Online Identity Survey’ found that an astonishing 77 percent of the American public express some degree of concern regarding the issue of ‘online identity.’ Significantly, the majority of Americans, 89 percent, now believe there to be personal material (such as photos, blog entries, Facebook profiles) relating to them on the Internet. Over 30 percent of people have been embarrassed by what others have published online. Almost 1 in 5 (18 percent) of Americans believe their online image gives an inaccurate portrayal of themselves, with some 27 percent later regretting posting material online.

Despite the level of regret, concern and misrepresentation, Americans still use the Internet to search and quickly judge other individuals. Over half (58 percent) admit to doing a search of people they meet online, whether it be for social reasons, job applicants, work contacts, romantic suitors or potential roommates. More than 75 percent of people judge others solely based on the material online, and believe that you can make a reliable assessment of a person from this. Some 67 percent of Americans recognize that an online image is something that needs to be carefully managed and accurate.

However, when asked the best method for accurately controlling and managing online identity, 70 percent of Americans responded ‘having your own personal website’ as one of the top methods. A further survey of 700 people who publish their own personal website, as opposed to just social networking pages like MySpace or Facebook, found that 85 percent felt significantly more in control over their online image using this medium.

Some 85 percent of people using a personal website believe that their website has given them a positive online image, and 80 percent agree that their resultant online image accurately represents them. Significantly, 77 percent stated that their website has created a more positive overall online image for them than a social networking page could. The research lends weight to the argument that personal websites can be a useful means to generate or make modifications to an online identity.

Of the personal publishers, three-quarters (75 percent) view their websites as an enjoyable activity, and some 85 percent believe it has made a positive contribution to their lives.

Mr. Mauss added, ”Now that web hosts provide the tools for all levels of users to easily develop and publish a personal website, many people are taking advantage of this opportunity. Personal website publishing is an enjoyable activity and the uses of it are endless; from a career portfolio site displaying your resume to a space to share hobbies and photos. Personal websites offer the high level of control and security that social networking sites do not.”

Cloud Computing, Spotlighted at HostingCon 2008

Chicago, Illinois - (The Hosting News) - July 30, 2008 - Cloud computing, through its presence at the 2008 HostingCon tradeshow in Chicago, Illinois this week, is the focus of Email hosting services, DNAmail.

As part of their attendance, George Mitsopoulos, VP and General Manager of DNAmail will be speaking on mail services and how to help ‘’server huggers” inside organizations let go of their mail server hardware and maintenance and feel comfortable about outsourced ‘cloud computing’ technologies.

DNAmail assists small and mid-sized businesses, organizations, and Internet service vendors to harness the power of web-based mail and messaging tools like Microsoft Exchange 2007, Blackberry Enterprise Services, and Google Apps.

Dean Russ, VP of Information Technology at DNAmail noted, ”There are three economic factors that will drive companies of all sizes to consider outsourcing their email. These include the declining costs of digital storage, the declining costs of servers, and the rising costs of labor in relation to in-house IT maintenance. Internal server administrators can’t keep up with the flood of spam, server filters, fixes, and patches. Most companies were not created to deliver and support email. DNAmail allows IT administrators to focus on their business, customers and employees rather than the constant server upkeep associated with email.”

Information workers in small and mid-sized companies are becoming highly fluent in customer-driven online ”cloud computing” services. Email is still the heart of company communications, and workers are adopting new mobile services including over-the-air push email devices like the iPhone 3G and Blackberry.

George Naspo, CEO, IKANO Communications Inc., parent company of DNAmail remarked, ”Now is the right time for organizations to be outsourcing their mail services. IT administrators can look to DNAmail for their email needs. Microsoft Exchange and Google Apps for businesses and service organizations are serious email solutions that can reduce IT costs and improve uptime and support.” DNAmail is at HostingCon 2008 (Booth #322).

DNAmail provides Microsoft Exchange 2007 email technology to enhance business collaboration and productivity. Connecting employees to a secure, central area for messaging, calendaring, and contacts, DNAmail gives businesses the freedom to easily work between multiple office locations and across multiple mobile devices. With IT professionals who specialize in maintaining guaranteed uptime, spam filtering, virus protection, security and reliability of communication services, DNAmail delivers enterprise-quality e-mail hosting at a fraction of the cost. Plans start at $9.95 a month per mailbox, with a 30-day free trial. DNAmail is a Blackberry Alliance Member, Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, and Google Apps Aggregator.

IKANO, founded in 1999, is a provider of IP solutions including email, Internet access, hosting, billing and end user support. IKANO makes it easy for customers and service providers to maintain their unique brand while eliminating the hassle of maintaining servers, network contracts and call centers. Data Center ownership powers managed hosting growth for iomart

Managed hosting and data centre services provider iomart plc has reported a 17 per cent rise in its sales of managed hosting services in the financial year 2007/08.

Revenues from its fledgling data centre and managed services company have increased by 63 per cent to £1.4m, with its established SME web hosting business, Easyspace, seeing a rise of 9 per cent to £6.3m.

Earlier this month the AIM-listed company revealed it had disposed of internet directory search business Ufindus to BT for the sum of £20m to concentrate on its data centre and managed hosting services.

Angus MacSween, iomart’s CEO stated: “This has been a transformational year with the successful sale of Ufindus for £20m and the development of our complex managed hosting business using our own network of carrier neutral datacentres. We are now well positioned to address our chosen market with the firepower to make strategic acquisitions in combination with our organic growth.”

In February 2007, iomart purchased four data centres and has since opened two fully-refurbished facilities – one in Glasgow, and one in the heart of the City of London. A third will be launched in Nottingham next week, with the final data centre, Leicester, expected to be ready for business during August.

Despite investing £3m in its data centre infrastructure over the year, the group’s profitability has suffered limited impact with EBITDA of £1M (2007 £1.3M).

The data centre investment allows the company to offer its corporate clients a guarantee of 100 per cent uninterrupted service, or uptime, as the company can now offer a full end to end service proposition from domain name through to data centre.

Angus MacSween, CEO of iomart, said: “Our focus on the data centre offering is paying off and we’re in a great position to win more high-margin corporate business. A complete ‘one source’ managed hosting service is very different to what’s on offer from other providers, ie space and power only, which puts us in a very strong position in the market.”

“We’ve equipped our four data centres with the latest technology and ensured that we have ample power to cope with expected future computing demands. We suffer none of the legacy problems that face many of today’s operators and this, coupled with a decade of hosting expertise, has been a significant selling point for us. This has been demonstrated by the group winning its largest single contract worth £5.75m over 5 years with BT.”

The average server rack now consumes 10 times more power than it did less than a decade ago. With this trend set to rise, future efficiencies have also been considered in the design of the data centres. In Nottingham for example iomart has installed the latest in efficient down flow units which are estimated to consume 7% less energy annually than the units they have replaced.

Angus said: “We recognise that we have a corporate, social and commercial responsibility to achieve the most efficient data centres that we can, and we will constantly seek to reduce our environmental impact where possible.”

The company also revealed it will look to use the proceeds of the Ufindus disposal to explore acquisition options over the next 12 months.

Angus MacSween added: “With the sale of Ufindus we find ourselves in the enviable position of having sufficient funding to fully underwrite our current business plans, without having to place reliance on borrowing facilities at this testing time in the credit market. We will be exploring a number of acquisition opportunities during the next year which will enable us to add revenues, skills and savings to the group”

HostingCon 2008 to Unveil Hosting Trade Group

Chicago, Illinois - (The Hosting News) - July 25, 2008 - The Association of Internet and Hosting Service Providers, AIHSP, has debuted, as the first-ever trade association serving the shared interests of providers and vendors in the Web hosting and Internet services industry.

The new initiative will be unveiled next week at HostingCon 2008, the largest annual gathering of Web services professionals and exhibitors, scheduled to take place July 28-30, at Chicago’s historic Navy Pier.

Paul Hirsch, President of the AIHSP Founding Committee, the group charged with laying the groundwork for the new organization noted, ”The notion of a professional association for the Web hosting and Internet Services industry has been discussed for many years, each time with widespread enthusiasm but ultimately a lack of dedicated energy. Today, we see a moment of tremendous opportunity, and we believe we have developed the strategy we need to make this a reality. We envision an organization owned by its members with the purpose of serving the industry as a whole.”

Through AIHSP, organizers hope to strengthen the Industry and forge stronger community ties - creating new connections within the marketplace and building relations with the general public, which lacks a fundamental understanding of the Industry and its needs. With these crucial advances, Internet and Hosting Service Providers can secure a more prosperous future and raise the bar of ethics and credibility.

AIHSP has set forth a list of goals it hopes to reach in the next several years. The group hopes to use the collective buying power of Web hosts and vendors to secure affordable access to employee benefits (including health and dental insurance); implement robust business ethics standards to boost Industry credibility; conduct meaningful market research to aid providers in strategic growth initiatives; offer increased networking opportunities for professionals; and develop a public relations team to respond to members of the media and lobby lawmakers for key legislation.

AIHSP will exhibit at booth #221 at HostingCon 2008, to be held next week in Chicago, Ill. Representatives from AIHSP will present ‘Making the Case: The Need for a Professional Association for Web hosts ‘at the conference on Tuesday, July 27 at 2:45pm. The opportunity to enroll as a member is imminent, and AIHSP encourages individuals and businesses to complete an interest form on its Web site (www.aihsp.org/Yes) to receive progress updates and get involved at the grassroots level.

HostingCon is the largest conference and trade show for the hosted services industry, this year to be spread over 56,000 square feet reserved specifically for the event, with approximately 20,000 net square feet of booth space in an easy to navigate floorplan. The exhibit hall will feature over 70 vendors displaying products and services, offering demonstrations and activities related to the hosted services industry.
