News for May, 2008

iWeb Financials Reported

Quebec, Canada - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - May 30, 2008 - Web hosting solutions and Internet infrastructure provider firm, iWeb Technologies, has released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal 2008.

Martin Leclair, Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of iWeb noted, ”Our financial results show once again a steady growth in revenues and adjusted EBITDA. Everything seems to indicate that our growth will continue: the occupancy rate of our principal data center for dedicated servers is quickly increasing and we will soon begin the work on the last phase for that site; phase one of work of our new co-location data center of Nuns’ Island is almost completed and we already welcomed our first customers; our new website under the domain name iweb.com is now on-line and features additional products and functionalities, and we can already notice that it had a positive impact on the number of visits on our website and on new recurring revenues. Therefore, the current trend is very positive and explains our optimism over our future growth.”

The Q2-2008 Summary includes:

• 56% increase in revenues to $3.6 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2008 compared to $2.3 million for the same period of 2007
• Adjusted EBITDA1 of $0.8 million for the second quarter, a 71% increase over the same period of fiscal 2007
• Company’s new website is now on-line: iweb.com
• Completion of work on phase 3 of Couture data center
• Completion of work on phase 1 of Nuns Island data center, and installation of first customers

Consolidated revenues of the second quarter ended March 31, 2008 were $3.6 million, compared to $2.3 million for the same period of 2007, an increase of $1.3 million or an improvement of 56%. Without taking in account the impact of the stronger Canadian dollar against the U.S. currency, growth in revenues would have been even better since 75% of Company’s revenues are generated in U.S. dollars.

Gross profit margin for the quarter was 53%, compared to 56% for the corresponding quarter of fiscal 2007. This decrease is mainly explained by the strength of the Canadian dollar against the U.S. currency. Contrary to revenues, a great portion of cost of services sold is expensed in Canadian dollars.

Operating expenses decreased to 52% of revenues for the second quarter of 2008, compared to 55% for the same period of last year. This improvement is mainly explained by a better control on advertising expenses, and by interest revenues generated by investments in term deposits coming from the net proceeds from the issuance of shares of November 2007. These positive impacts in operating expenses were partly reduced by higher stock-based compensation expenses.

Adjusted EBITDA increased to $0.8 million, or 23% of revenues, for the quarter ended March 31, 2008, compared to $0.5 million, or 21% of revenues for the same three-month period of previous fiscal year, an improvement of 71% year-over-year.

Net earnings remained nearly at the same level of the preceding year and were $19,225 or $0.0007 per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2008, compared to $21,710 or $0.0009 per share for the same period one year-ago.

Second quarter ended March 31 (2008 vs 2007) includes:

Revenues : $3,574,627 $2,290,877
Gross profit : $1,896,807 $1,281,904
Net earnings : $19,225 $21,710
Earnings per share - basic : $0.0007 $0.0009
Adjusted EBITDA(1) : $837,976 $489,144
Total assets : $21,516,345 *$14,788,031
Shareholders equity : $5,814,903 *$1,957,453
Cash and term deposits : $2,287,568 *$844,456

The Planet Attains Data Center Award

Houston, Texas - (The Hosting News) - May 29, 2008 - Dedicated hosting company, The Planet’s Vice President of Facilities, Jeff Lowenberg, has been awarded with the first-ever ”Data Center Manager of the Year” award from SearchDataCenter.com.

The award recognizes excellence in data center project management, according to senior site editor Matt Stansberry. Mr. Lowenberg was recognized for his work that will save the company over $1 million on energy costs in 2008 alone, based on the implementation of new ”green” data center efficiencies.

Mr. Lowenberg provided a guided tour that outlines the efficiencies the company has implemented. Douglas J. Erwin, Chairman and CEO of The Planet remarked, ”From our own research and through discussions with customers, they choose The Planet based on the quality of our world-class data centers and network, as well as our reputation for customer service. With more than 50,000 servers across our data centers, energy is our fourth-largest expense. Jeff Lowenberg’s work contributes significantly to customer satisfaction, as well as to our bottom line. Jeff’s award is a resounding commentary on the quality of our data centers, which our customers will appreciate.”

Mr. Lowenberg conducted a six-month trial to reduce power consumption and increase data center operating efficiency. Initial results demonstrate that while critical server loads increased by 5 percent, power used for cooling decreased by 31 percent. Overall, the company experienced power reductions of up to 13.5 percent through a broad range of improvements. The new green initiatives were conducted across its six world-class data centers.

Armin Heinlein with Panalpina Group was a runner-up, followed by finalists Ben Stewart with Terremark and William Stewart with Sempra Energy.

The Planet operates more than 150 30-ton computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units across its six data centers. In one data center alone, the company was able to turn off four of the units. The cooling requirement on two of the units was reduced to 50 percent of capacity, while another nine now operate at 25 percent of capacity. The company also extended the return air plenums on all of its down-flow CRAC units to optimize efficiency. In some cases, The Planet team was able to increase CRAC unit temperature settings by as much as 10 degrees while still meeting the thermal guidelines for data processing environments set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Across the board, the company evaluated both its data center footprint and recommended guidelines from the Site Uptime Network, an invitation-only consortium of companies that operate data centers around the globe. The Planet also evaluated standards for air conditioning efficiency from ASHRAE to optimize operating performance. Among these improvements are the following:

  • Rearranged floor tiles to better manage cold airflow
  • Installed seals and grommets in the ceilings, walls and floors to reduce bypass airflow
  • Installed blanking plates in server cabinets to direct airflow more efficiently
  • Sealed power distribution units to reduce bypass airflow

Last month, The Planet added an automated recovery solution, which is now available on all of its new and existing servers within the company’s extensive offerings. The Automated Rescue Environment (ARE) allows customers to self-restore and repair their servers directly from The Planet customer portal in the event of a critical software failure.

Ultimately, The Planet endeavors to provide the following:

  • High level of network capacity and speed to deliver peak performance
  • Instant scalability to handle even the largest spikes in network traffic
  • Parallel, redundant, multi-tiered network routing and switching architecture to assure reliability and stability
  • Multiple layer network security that prevents Delayed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks from harming businesses
  • Knowledgeable experts with a passion for excellence and a commitment to operate the best networks in the business

The Planet is a leading provider of On Demand IT Infrastructure solutions, hosting more than 22,000 small and medium size businesses and 6.7 million web sites worldwide, using the best choice of servers, software tools and support, backed by state-of-the-art facilities and network connectivity.

UK2 Updates Hosting Order Process

London, United Kingdom - (The Hosting News) - May 28, 2008 - UK2.net hosting, has debuted a newly enhanced, instant domain look up tool, as part of its larger effort to completely upgrade its order process application.

Intended to modernise the way customers buy hosting products and services, the new domain look up tool allows customers to search for multiple domains, and make changes to their shopping basket, in a single browser window. It also uses Ajax technology for searching instantly - beginning the search as soon as you start typing. All of this means that if a customer wants to register multiple Domain Names and multiple types of TLD in a single order, they can do this in a fast and efficient way by using the new UK2 domain look up.

Ditlev Bredahl, CEO / MD of UK2.net noted, ”Our new domain look up tool and order process are the result of several weeks of hard week, so we are very pleased to announce the launch. UK2 is a very innovative company, always looking for ways to improve our services to customers, and looking at the significant amount of Domain Names registered each day we knew that making registration even easier would be a welcome development.”

Using expert input from the leading research company Marketing Experiments, once a Domain Name has been selected customers then enter a much simplified and more intuitive order process. The rationale behind the new order process was to follow the Marketing Experiments guidelines of removing friction and reducing anxiety, so customers are only asked for essential information. This new rationale also applies when ordering a UK2 Web Hosting package, where traditionally the order process involved several steps. Now, with UK2.net this order process takes just a few clicks, as customers first place the Web Hosting order and then decide on what domains they would like to use or buy afterwards.

The new look up tool means that customers can now secure their online identity, quickly and efficiently, without having to place multiple orders. UK2.net offer a range of the most popular Domain Names, starting from 2.99 pounds per year exc. VAT.

In April, UK-2 Group released its first quarter results, indicating the best ever, since the domain name registration highs of the early 2000’s.
In addition, the excellent growth seen by the company is in the higher revenue and profit areas of shared and dedicated hosting, not just domain names.

UK2.net has been a significant player in the British and European hosting markets since 1998, and is the founder brand of the UK-2 Group. UK2.net underwent a large organisational and strategic restructure in 2006, so to take advantage of the increase in popularity of hosting services and associated growth in the hosting market. The company has significantly increased customer numbers since then, and continues to challenge the other leading hosting brands.

Earlier this year, the company acquired clients from US host Stargate and midPhase Services Inc.’s Shared and Virtual Private Server businesses. UK-2 Group has been a significant player in the British and European hosting markets for many years, and recently underwent a large restructure, making important organizational changes in readiness for customer growth plans and challenging the bigger hosting brands. UK-2 is one of the largest domain registrars in the UK having registered over 1 million domain names.

UK-2 Group intends to continue operation of midPhase’s various brands, including: midPhase.com, ANHosting.com and Autica.com, due to its successful approach and market leadership to date. UK2 will not integrate midPhase into any existing UK-2 Group brand. This means there will be no impact on existing midPhase customers in terms of products, services, prices and support. UK-2 does not plan to migrate servers and has chosen to collocate the existing midPhase servers with SingleHop, Inc., a company owned and operated by Zak Boca and Dan Ushman.

UK-2 Group, a major player in the hosting industry since the late nineties, provides domain name registration and web hosting services to many customers through its family of hosting brands - UK2.net, US2.net, midPhase Services, AN Hosting, Autica and Resell.biz. The group operates its services out of several multi million pound data centres and are committed to providing reliable, secure and great value products and services underpinned with excellent support. UK2-Group is also a major shareholder in the merged Redbus Interhouse and Telecity Group, the leading European data centre provider.

Rackspace Renewable Energy Data Center Debuts

London, United Kingdom - (The Hosting News) - May 22, 2008 - Designed to be powered by renewable energy sources, a new green data center, drawing power from a local combined heat and power plant, has been unveiled by Rackspace Managed Hosting.

Using wood chips, waste paper and fibre fuel to generate electricity, hot water and steam, the data center is located in in Slough, Berkshire.
Power for the data centre comes from the UK’s largest dedicated bio-mass energy plant, which is operated by Scottish and Southern Energy. Rackspace has converted a former warehouse on the Slough Trading Estate, to provide 55,000 square feet of net technical space. Construction has been completed and equipment is being installed in the first data hall. The first customers are scheduled to go live in June. The date centre layout has been built to Rackspace specifications, which were designed to better manage customer needs.

Doug Loewe, Managing Director of Rackspace explained, ”This is a fantastic project which will harness bio-mass fuels to power the data centre. Rackspace is committed to being energy efficient and making a real and positive difference to the environment. By investing in this facility we continue to strive to exceed the environmental expectations of our customers while delivering their hosting needs.”

Rackspace was one of the UK’s first hosting companies to offer carbon neutral hosting in 2006 by planting trees through its relationship with the International Tree Foundation, the world’s longest standing tree planting charity.
