Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 Debuts

Renton, Washington - (The Hosting News) - January 31, 2008 - Server virtualization firm, Parallels (formerly SWsoft), has released its latest version of the container-based server virtualization software. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers Version 4.0, includes enhancements and features designed to improve usability, data center management and business continuity.

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers differs from traditional hardware virtualization solutions in that it dynamically partitions a single Windows or Linux operating system instance into highly efficient and scalable virtual environments or ”containers.”

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels noted, ”The ever-changing needs of today’s enterprise data centers call for a virtualization solution that is flexible and delivers high performance. With the release of Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0, we are launching the next wave of virtualization, including a suite of products that help IT administrators effectively manage their growing virtual infrastructures.”

By delivering native server performance, Virtuozzo virtualization can be used with performance-sensitive workloads such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases that are not practical with other virtualization solutions due to their associated overhead and the performance penalties that are incurred.

Mr. Beloussov continued, ”Parallels offers the right technological approach coupled with the best economics to deliver a comprehensive suite of virtualization and automation products for any hardware or software environment.”

Also, Parallels Virtuozzo offers three times the density or more versus other solutions, which permits data center managers to maximize the number of virtual containers per each physical server. In fact, Virtuozzo is the only virtualization solution that enables dozens to hundreds of containers to immediately and automatically leverage hardware, resulting in exceptional data center efficiency from administrative, ROI and energy-consumption perspectives. Along with the increased density capabilities, IT administrators can reduce operating system sprawl in the data center by using Virtuozzo.

Robert Berry, Director of Technical Services, Homes and Land Magazine, noted, ”We were impressed by the Beta and are looking forward to implementing Virtuozzo 4.0. The new centralized management and networking options in the tools will make managing our virtualized data center even easier.”

John Humphreys, Program Vice President with IDC’s Enterprise Platform Group remarked, ”With the Virtuozzo product, Parallels is focused on taking virtualization to the next level. By virtualizing above the operating system, customers get both the benefits of hardware reduction and a reduction in the number of operating system images they need to run to support their applications.”

Diane Bryant, Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Server Platforms Group commented, ”As virtualization continues to proliferate in data centers and on desktops, Intel is delivering leading platform capabilities and performance to foster the growth. Parallels Virtuozzo 4.0’s manageability tools, ease-of-use and reliability take advantage of the performance improvements with Intel’s latest generation of Quad Core Xeon and Itanium processors and make it a leading virtualization solution.”

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 offers new features and functionality in several key areas:

- Business Continuity - Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 includes several new options to drive uptime, such as Windows Server 2003 and Red Hat clustering services. In addition, Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 delivers a comprehensive set of backup enhancements

- Ease of Use and Manageability - Version 4.0 extends the already significant resource management in Parallels Virtuozzo Containers with the inclusion of virtual CPU improvements, burstable CPU limits, hardware device forwarding, hardware device sharing and more

- Efficiency - Version 4.0’s architectural enhancements provide even higher levels of stability and performance. New efficiency-driving features include real-time optimization of hardware resources, and an improved Virtuozzo file system that speeds common management tasks and more effectively utilizes hard disk resources. More information about how customers are using Parallels Virtuozzo can be found at www.parallels.com/virtuozzo.

Virtuozzo 4.0 also introduces the Parallels Infrastructure Manager, a powerful tool for managing the Virtualized Data Center that enables IT administrators to efficiently manage their infrastructure from anywhere.

The Parallels Infrastructure Manager includes a number of important features such as:

- Enhanced Permissions - Includes role-based security and audit, Microsoft Active Directory support and LDAP integration.
- Newly Designed Management Tool - Easier assessment of resources and assets via powerful dashboards.
- Large Scale Deployment and Management Capabilities - Includes application and OS templates as well as centralized data center management, providing logical views of the data center.

Parallels Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 is available worldwide from Parallels or any of its partners. The product, including the Parallels Infrastructure Manager, is available for $3,000 per dual CPU. A Parallels Virtuozzo Containers license can be purchased without the Parallels Infrastructure Manager for $2,500 per dual CPU.

Parallels (formerly SWsoft) is a worldwide leader in virtualization and automation software that optimizes computing for consumers, businesses and service providers across all major hardware, operating system and virtualization platforms. Host Gator Revenue Shared with Charities

Houston, Texas - (The Hosting News) - January 29, 2008 - Shared, dedicated and reseller web hosting firm, Host Gator, after reporting a successful fiscal year, has given gifts to support cancer fighting initiatives, while promoting education in underdeveloped countries.

The company gave $100,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, and $25,000 to One Laptop per Child. The gifts were decided upon by HostGator management and staff, including a significant contribution to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Brent Oxley, President of HostGator noted, ”The gift to Anderson reflected a mix of the wishes of the staff here at HostGator and suggestions from our users. It’s pretty hard to find anybody whose life hasn’t been touched in some way — directly or indirectly — by cancer. We gave to them, partly because we’re located in Houston and some of our employees have had family members treated there, but mostly we gave because of their amazing country-wide reputation for treating patients and researching cancer cures.”

In addition. HostGator donated to the international organization, One Laptop Per Child. The Anderson Cancer Center received a gift of $100,000 and One Laptop per Child received $25,000. The goal of One Laptop per Child is spelled out in its name: to improve the educational opportunities for children in underdeveloped regions by giving every child access to an inexpensive, durable, web-capable laptop. At $100 each, the gift from HostGator should provide at least 250 laptops.

The gift to One Laptop per Child was another easy decision, according to Mr. Oxley, ”If it wasn’t for the internet and computers we wouldn’t be in business. If just one of the kids can further their knowledge in computers and make a career out of it, in some shape or form, it will have been worth every penny.”

At Anderson, one of the country’s largest cancer treatment centers, HostGator’s gift will go to support a variety of programs — from research and clinical trials, to education, counseling and treatments. Mr. Oxley says as HostGator continues to grow and earn profits, it will continue increasing the amount of its annual gifts.

Mr. Oxley added, ”As a company, we expect to go on making charitable donations, and letting our people decide each year where our gifts should go. We want the benefits of our success to go beyond our own narrow interests, so that’s why we’ll keep on doing it. Some other companies may donate for ‘political’ reasons, not because they really want to help — but that’s still good. Whatever the motives and whatever the amounts given, it all helps. The more corporate giving there is, the better.”

Host Gator is a provider of shared, dedicated and reseller web hosting services focused on the consumer and small business markets. Founded in 2002, Host Gator has become a leader in reseller hosting, assisting over 15,000 businesses become web hosting companies, currently hosting over 700,000 domains. Netfirms Domains to Include Dot-ca

Toronto, Canada - (Website Hosting Directory) - January 28, 2007 - Web hosting solutions provider, Netfirms, is cautioning that the new dot-ca domain names will sell out quickly in 2008. In particular, Canadians have embraced dot-ca domains, with nearly one million domains registered to date.

According to CIRA’s dot-ca domain registration count, the rapid growth of dot-ca domains is no surprise to Netfirms, whose customers have found that dot-ca domains are trusted by Canadians, more available than dot-com and priced competitively.

Alexey Kapralov, Founder of eShopp remarked, ”Having a dot-ca domain name has helped customers trust my online store. I’ve found that Canadians prefer to buy from my store because I’m located in Canada. That’s why having a dot-ca domain name is especially important for Canadian businesses.”

Registering a dot-ca domain name is particularly important for small businesses targeting Canadian consumers. A dot-ca domain name, paired with a Canadian focused website helps establish a trusted brand that attracts Canadian customers.

Although they’re going quickly, there are still more dot-ca domains available than dot-com. The entire dot-ca domain namespace consists of nearly one million registered domains compared to nearly seventy million registered dot-com domains.

Gregg McLachlan, Founder and President of WorkCabin commented, ”Showing our Canadian identity is extremely important - that’s we were glad to find our dot-ca domain name was available. It has definitely helped us successfully grow our services on the web and immediately connect us with Canadians.”

Jason Matheson, Product Manager, Netfirms, Inc. noted, ”Until a few years ago, dot-ca domain names were typically more expensive than dot-com. We started offering CIRA certified dot-ca domains for as low as $9.95 CAD per year – comparable to the industry standard price for a dot-com.”

Netfirms offers small businesses everything they need to establish a Canadian web presence with the lowest priced dot-ca domain names and business web hosting. For $9.95 per year, the dot-ca domain product includes:

  • A CIRA certified, dot-ca domain name (example.ca).
  • A basic webpage accessible through the domain name that can be edited immediately.
  • An email account @ the domain including spam filtering.
  • Full DNS management through the user-friendly Netfirms control panel.
  • 24/7 access to expert technical support.

Mark Bowden, Founder of Truthplane Communication Training added, ”My dot-ca domain and web hosting through Netfirms has made it easy for me to share my knowledge and expand my Canadian client-base. Netfirms is simply the best choice for feature-rich domains and business web hosting.”

Netfirms, Inc., founded in 1998, provides web hosting solutions and technology to successful small and medium-sized businesses, home office, entrepreneurs and individuals worldwide. Fox Approves GoDaddy Super Bowl Ad

Scottsdale, Arizona - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - January 25, 2008 - Web hosting domain registrar, GoDaddy’s 2008 Super Bowl television campaign ad, has been approved, after ten submissions, including five concepts, three of which Go Daddy actually produced, and a number of revisions.

The Fox television network has approved ”Spot On” to air during this year’s Super Bowl broadcast. Several character actors are in the commercial, which also includes a key appearance by Indy race car driver and Go Daddy Girl Danica Patrick.

Bob Parsons, Founder and CEO of GoDaddy noted, ”I think Exposure is the funniest commercial we’ve ever made. It’s hilarious. We are going to have to make lemonade out of lemons on this one. It’s risky, but we’ve changed our whole marketing plan so we can leverage something out of this smokin’ hot spot.”

According to Go Daddy, CEO and Founder Bob Parsons is disappointed the network won’t approve another commercial featuring Patrick, but neither Fox, nor Mr. Parsons, will compromise. In the ad, titled ”Exposure,” Parsons refused to capitulate to Fox’s request for the word ”beaver” to be removed. The word ”beaver” is used to reference Animatronics beavers filmed in the ad.

Since Go Daddy can’t broadcast ”Exposure,” Mr. Parsons has decided, instead, to use the thirty-second approved Super Bowl commercial slot to tell people how to see the ad intended for the big game on www.godaddy.com.

Go Daddy is no stranger to difficult approval processes and has a notorious history with the Fox television network. The network pulled Go Daddy’s first-ever Super Bowl commercial after approving it in writing. The commercial was a parody on censorship. It aired once during the 2005 broadcast, but Fox yanked it before its second airing, triggering an avalanche of controversy. Ironically, a college marketing textbook featuring the legendary Go Daddy commercial notes how Fox is actually known for its irreverent programming.

Mr. Parsons added, ”Ever since the so-called wardrobe malfunction, Super Bowl ads have lost a certain edge. We want ours to be GoDaddy-esque. That means it’s funny, edgy and just a touch inappropriate… but nothing more outrageous than you might see on any given day at any shopping mall in America.”

Some critics have panned the risqué advertising style, but Go Daddy’s Super Bowl commercials have translated into big market growth each and every year. Following the 2005 Super Bowl commercial, Go Daddy grew its industry market share of new domain names from 16 percent to 25 percent, making it the largest registrar in the world. The following year, new market share surged to 32 percent and last year’s commercial helped boost Go Daddy’s industry edge to its current 42 percent mark.

The often maligned GoDaddy-esque ad from last year’s Super Bowl not only generated big business, it also stuck in viewers’. In fact, IAG Research recently ranked Go Daddy’s 2007 ad as the Most Recalled commercial for the entire year.

This year’s ad, like Go Daddy’s controversial 2005 wardrobe malfunction” spot, spoofs a certain pop culture celebrity phenomenon. ”Exposure” will be available at www.goDaddy.com/superbowl08 when the company’s approved commercial airs game day, February 3.

Danica Patrick remarked, ”The Exposure commercial is hot, it’s funny and I just can’t wait for the whole world to see it.”

1 and 1 Engages NetIron XMR Multi-Service

Santa Clara, California - (The Hosting News) - January 24, 2008 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, is supported by Foundry Networks, Inc., with its installation of the NetIron XMR 4000 backbone routers, to power the network for scalable growth and allow for significant capital and operating expenditure savings.

During the planning phase of this major backbone upgrade, 1 and 1 chose Foundry’s NetIron XMR 4000 for its port density and performance, while also offering compelling economies of scale and long-term investment protection. 1 and 1 initially installed the NetIron XMR routers in the European part of the backbone and after successful results expanded the installation to the Kansas City Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

Due to the large scale, 1 and 1 is running its own transcontinental Wide Area Network (WAN) - which differentiates the company from other web hosting firms. On the equipment side, backbone routers of multiple vendors are used to ensure maximum redundancy, reliability and security. On the network structure side, two independent ring systems in Europe and the United States are connected redundantly via two transatlantic connections and grant access to more than 400 other providers via 700 BGP routing sessions.

To meet consumer and business customers’ expectations for fast and reliable services, 1 and 1 is continuously optimizing its network. To preserve market leadership and provide next generation services, the European WAN network, which originally consisted of a SDH topology with a bandwidth of 2.5 GB/sec, is now upgraded to connections consisting of single or even multiple 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) channels. This ensures that 1 and 1’s future network increases as web hosting continues to grow.

The new Lenexa Data Center has the capacity for more than 40,000 servers and enables 1 and 1 to support rapid customer growth in the United States. The data center is linked to 1 and 1’s own 10GbE Kansas City metro ring to continue offering a high level of product and providing more than 99.99% uptime. The addition of Foundry routers gives 1 and 1 hosting users the advantage of heightened security and the next generation of technology enabling industry leading performance.

1 and 1 Internet has reported extensive growth as one of the world’s largest and fastest growing web hosts. According to independent studies, 1 and 1 hosts almost 2.6 million active web sites and has 9.1 million domains registered. 1 and 1’s global community is 7.07 million customers strong. Expanding globally, 1 and 1 is already one of the United States’ top five service providers. The data transfer rate of business and consumer Web sites hosted is nearly 6.5 petabytes per month.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman for 1 and 1 Internet remarked, ”The reason for the increasing popularity of 1 and 1’s web hosting service, besides affordability, is the industry leading performance and reliability. To maintain this advantage, we are constantly implementing technologies to improve our customers’ experience. After thoroughly analyzing competing products, we are convinced that Foundry’s NetIron XMR Series routers provide us with the upgrade path and feature set that allows future bandwidth growth and a high level of performance.”

Ken Cheng, Vice President and General Manager for Foundry’s High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit noted, ”We are very pleased that 1 and 1 Internet has chosen the NetIron XMR backbone routers to power their global Web hosting and service provider network. Performance, reliability and scalability are crucial elements in accommodating future network expansion. Using Foundry’s class-leading routers, 1 and 1 is well prepared for this growth and poised to take advantage of market opportunities as the world’s largest and fastest growing Web host.”
