Aplus.Net Redesigns Website

Overland Park, Kansas - (The Hosting News) - September 28, 2007 - Web host and Internet solutions provider, Aplus.Net, has unveiled an extensive overhaul and redesign of its main website, designed to update the company’s image, while offering improved navigation.

Gabriel Murphy, President and CEO of Aplus.Net commented, ”We worked hard to come up with a dynamic and customer-friendly design that reflects the fact that, although our emphasis and our expertise are still firmly based upon helping small businesses succeed online, we’re also entering into an exciting new era for Aplus.Net and our more than 90,000 customers.”

According to the company, while the new website boasts a modernized look and feel, it is still consistent with the company brand and immediately recognizable as Aplus.Net. The color palette remains the same, and Aplus.Net’s logo, which was itself overhauled in May, will also be left unchanged. The site’s layout continues to reflects a simple, classic look and feel, but with modern flourishes, updated graphics, and greatly improved ease of use. Gone are the constantly shifting sub-menus that once followed cursors through the horizontal main menu. The main menu remains horizontal, but is now accompanied by a new animated sidebar to provide improved visibility for Aplus.Net’s most popular products and services.

Ryan Elledge, Chief Operations Officer at Aplus.Net offered, ”Our many customers are the foundation of Aplus.Net, and so we wanted to offer them a website that’s easier than ever to navigate and to understand. These improvements were designed first and foremost to make the Aplus.Net shopping experience as customer-friendly and as enjoyable as possible. Secondly, it was important to update our image to let the world know that, whatever new advances the future of online business may bring, you’ll find it here first.”

The launch was timed to occur just days before the much-anticipated unveiling of the new Aplus.Net web design page (scheduled for the first of October), which will offer the newly acquired web Image brand of web design templates. Sub-domains for Domain Names and Dedicated Servers have already been successfully launched in recent weeks, as well.

Mr. Murphy continued, ”There’s a lot in store for this company. As we continue to expand our web hosting base and fully integrate the Web Image brand into the Aplus.Net family, we’ll also be moving into the next generation of Internet services, such as Web 2.0 and Software-as-a-Service. It’s essential for our website to emphasize that this is a visionary company, an industry leader.”

In August, Aplus finalized its acquisition of full-service Internet marketing and website development company based in White Plains, New York, WebImage. Aplus.Net was represented by RBC Daniels in the transaction and financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. WebImage is best known for its highly streamlined approach to volume web design, with its business model focused on premium Internet presence solutions for small businesses. In addition, WebImage positions itself as a business partner for small- to medium-sized businesses seeking a single business partner to provide an Internet presence solution complete with design, hosting and marketing services.

WebImage was formerly a business unit of White Plains, New York-based TSV Group. Felix Rodriguez, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of TSV Group remarked, ”We’ve worked hard to make the WebImage brand synonymous with excellence and value, and we have complete confidence that under Aplus.Net, with its distinctive history of technological innovation, that reputation will grow even stronger.”

Aplus.Net has provided web services since the Internet’s commercial start in 1995. Aplus.Net is one of the top ten privately held hosting companies in the United States. Specializing in helping small businesses build a customer base via the Internet, Aplus.Net offers award-winning services that include web hosting and design, dedicated servers, online marketing, e-commerce, domain name registration, and much more. New Quad-Cores, at Rackspace

San Antonio, Texas - (The Hosting News) - September 28, 2007 - Managed hosting services firm, Rackspace Managed Hosting, will begin offering the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor to its U.S. customer base, featuring energy efficiency, performance and virtualization designed to upgrade the Second-Generation AMD Opteron processors.

Patrick Patla, Director of Product Management, Server/Workstation Division at AMD remarked, ”Rackspace has been a long-time, successful vendor of AMD Opteron processors. Their commitment to continuous performance improvement for their thousands of customers pushes us to deliver industry-leading technology like Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors. With innovative power management capabilities, increased performance-per-watt capabilities, and scalable performance, Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors will help Rackspace create a scalable, secure and high-performance web environment.”

According to the company, Rackspace will be the first hosting provider to offer Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, which present a native multi-core architecture with all four cores on one piece of silicon, allowing them to communicate more efficiently for improved performance and performance-per-watt. These processors also include power efficiency features like AMD CoolCore technology, designed to turn off portions of the processor logic and memory controller when not in use and reduce processor energy consumption and heat generation. Along with Enhanced AMD PowerNow! technology, the processors’ advanced performance-per-watt capabilities help lower the energy consumption of a customer’s IT infrastructure while providing optimum application performance.

Nicolas Keller, Director of Platform Products at Rackspace Managed Hosting offered, ”We’ve found that AMD Opteron processors are an incredibly reliable platform for customers with multi-threaded applications or heavy database usage. Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors coincides directly with our GreenSpace initiative of lowering power consumption, which in turn delivers great cost benefits to us that we can ultimately pass on to customers. It is apparent that the processor was designed with virtualization in mind, delivering near native performance on virtualized applications and greatly improving virtualized application performance by allowing virtual machines to manage memory more efficiently.”

Recently, Rackspace conducted a survey revealing that 57 percent of respondents are already using virtualization for internal applications. In addition, 72 percent of respondents are comfortable hosting mission-critical applications in a production environment on a virtualized platform. There is a great demand for leveraging the benefit of virtualization through a third-party hosting company: 71 percent of respondents would host their applications on a virtualized infrastructure with a hosting provider. However, the majority of customers are currently not comfortable utilizing a shared, virtual environment. Only 13 percent of respondents are confidently willing to share a physical server with other hosting customers, a practice common in hosting, with top concerns stemming from performance and security vulnerabilities in shared environments.

Additionally, the Rackspace survey revealed that 42 percent of respondents believe virtualization will have a fundamental impact on information technology. Although 43 percent had no preference between using open source or proprietary virtualization products, the majority of respondents use VMware. The methodology for this research involved sending an email survey to approximately 3,000 Rackspace customers. More than 12 percent of survey recipients responded to the questions.

A recognized global managed hosting firm, Rackspace Managed Hosting is a service organization delivering enterprise-level web infrastructure and managed services to businesses of all sizes. Serving more than 10,000 customers across seven data centers worldwide, Rackspace integrates the industry’s best technologies for each customer need and delivers it as a service via the company’s award-winning Fanatical Support. Founded in 1998, Rackspace has grown more than 50 percent a year since the company’s inception.

Prepared by Frost and Sullivan’s Stratecast Partners, the white paper compares hosted solutions with the do-it-yourself, in-house approach over the course of a three-year period. ”The Planet’s Hosted Microsoft SBS Service: An Attractive IT Outsourcing Solution for Small Businesses,” — weighs the cost of an in-house, do-it-yourself approach compared with The Planet’s hosted Microsoft SBS solution. For example, initial results show SMB customers with 20 employees spend approximately $35,600 with The Planet’s hosted SBS solution, while a do-it-yourself approach could average upwards of $87,400.

Virtual Iron Debuts Research Survey

Lowell, Massachusetts - (The Hosting News) - September 27, 2007 - Enterprise-class server virtualization and virtual infrastructure management software firm, Virtual Iron Software, has debuted its launch of a new research survey, in order to determine the emerging IT infrastructure requirements of hosted service providers.

All respondents will be automatically entered in a drawing for a new Apple iPhone, to encourage participation. At the project’s conclusion, Virtual Iron will publish the findings of the results of the survey, and make them available for download at its website. The brief survey, focusing on the data center needs of hosted service providers and the potential role of server virtualization, is located at www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Cpjf7jAFhNOAL7GtfQde6Q_3d_3d.

Hosted services businesses have unique IT infrastructure requirements - managing hundreds — if not thousands — of different customer environments. They need to cost-effectively deliver increasingly high service levels in a utility computing model. To be successful they must:

  • Share computing infrastructure across multiple customers while delivering all the security, isolation and performance of a dedicated environment.
  • Expand and differentiate service offerings while meeting stringent service level requirements.
  • Address problems associated with under-utilized capacity or under-sized hardware and manage hardware outages.
  • Simplify system management and reduce high operational costs caused by a complex data center infrastructure.

The survey examines hosted service provider’s needs in these areas and the role server virtualization might play in addressing them by reducing data center operational costs, increasing management flexibility and improving service levels. Participants should be involved with at least one of the following business types:

  • Website hosting
  • Application hosting, software as a service
  • Outsourced servers (shared or dedicated environments)

Virtual Iron provides production-ready server virtualization and virtual infrastructure management capabilities for unmodified Windows and Linux at one-fifth the cost of comparable alternatives. The platform combines an open source hypervisor with advanced virtualization services and sophisticated policy-based management. Virtual Iron’s products are designed to enable users to take full advantage of new hardware-assisted virtualization (Intel VT and AMD-V) on servers, to deliver near native performance. The software also offers other enterprise-class capabilities such as large memory support (up to 96 GB), large SMP capabilities (up to 8 CPUs) and the ability to virtualize server platforms with up to 32 physical CPUs. Virtual Iron requires no installation or management of software on physical servers, further simplifying installation and data center operations, which differs from other virtualization solutions.

Virtual Iron’s enterprise-class server virtualization and virtual infrastructure management software, is designed to enable companies to reduce the cost and complexity of managing and operating data centers. The software includes advanced capabilities that leverage industry standards, open source economics and built-in hardware-assisted acceleration. Small, medium and large organizations worldwide may use Virtual Iron for: production server consolidation; development and test optimization; cost-effective high availability and disaster recovery; dynamic capacity management; and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). The software is available exclusively through Virtual Iron’s Channel One partner network. Evaluation copies are also available for free download.

R1Soft CDP Server 2.0 Debuts

Houston, Texas - (The Hosting News) - September 27, 2007 - Developer of near-continuous data protection products for Linux and Windows, R1Soft’s CDP Server, has been upgraded to the next major version of the Continuous Data Protection product, with CDP Server 2.0.

The new release includes a variety of functional enhancements from previous versions of the product, and also introduces an array of new features not previously available. Namely, CDP Server 2.0 offers improved speeds when disk compression is enabled, Disk Safe Repair to cleanly recover archived data from server crashes or power failures, and performance improvements that allow users to run as many simultaneous backup tasks as their hardware can handle.

CDP Server 2.0 now includes email reporting features, allowing the server to automatically dispatch status reports via email directly to end users. The new version now comes standard with support for the ReiserFS file system and No More File System Indexing (Make File List) which means no more waiting for file system indexes to restore files. Files are available for restore as soon as the backup operation has completed.

David Wartell, Founder and CEO of R1Soft remarked, ”The release of the second major version of CDP Server marks an important milestone for both our company as a whole and our dedicated development team. With today’s announcement, we are making available a product that has been in the months in the making. We have invested thousands of hours in building the next iteration of the world’s most innovative, flexible, scalable and reliable data protection product.”

To upgrade from previous versions of CDP Server, users need to download and execute the upgrade installer for version 2.0. The software will automatically update without the need for a clean installation of the new version.

Recently in August, R1 Soft announced that it now fully supports ReiserFS, a journaling file system and leading alternative to the standard Linux extended file system, known as ext2 or ext3. The company’s CDP Server has previously introduced support for an array of Linux distributions running on the Linux 2.4 Kernel or higher. Specifically supported distributions include Fedora Core; Debian Linux; CentOS Linux; OpenVZ; RedHat Enterprise; Virtuozzo; Ubuntu; and custom built vanilla or patched Linux 2.6 kernels. A beta Windows agent of the CDP Server is also available. R1Soft plans to introduce official support for Novell Suse and OpenSuse in the near future.

R1Soft’s CDP products diverge significantly from traditional backup technologies, which essentially copy files at intervals from hard disks to another medium, such as a tape drive. These methods often only provide data protection on a daily or weekly basis, resulting in large losses of data in the event of a disaster. R1Soft’s CDP Server, however, monitors changes to the disk as they happen, thereby reducing backup windows to seconds or minutes. It also affords even busy servers a significantly higher level of reliability in the event of a disaster, without the consumption of a large amount of system resources.

R1Soft currently produces Continuous Data Protection solutions designed for data centers, web hosting providers, and other firms using Linux servers. Founded in 2003, Righteous Software is a provider of disk-based backup solutions, with low cost, scalable and integrated products, featuring products designed to integrate with Linux-based systems.

Ben Gabler, Director of Operations at HostNine remarked, ”Everything from the partnerships we have with FastServers.Net and ModernBill to the outstanding employees we have working day in and day out has contributed to our success. It’s an amazing feeling to know we were hand picked for this award by the DevStart team, the team behind HostReview.com.”

Maria Mitsova, Editor at DevStart, Inc. added, ”HostNine is a young company whose ambition has led to terrific results after only one year of service. HostNine’s use of the latest technologies and the utmost care it shows for its customers won the company the top position on the HostReview fastest growing hosting companies list.”

When ranking hosting companies, DevStart takes into consideration a suite of factors. Factors include customer service, new products, promotions, overall performance, and the popularity of the company’s website.

HostNine’s use of the latest technologies includes the launch of its new Reseller Central product in August. Since the launch, the hosting company has experienced an increase in overall performance due to substantially lower server loads.

Recently, the company debuted the launch of its Reseller Central, where resellers may manage all of their domains across multiple cPanel servers, regardless of their physical location. Resellers no longer have to purchase multiple accounts with multiple companies to delegate their domains across different servers. Reseller Central was designed from the ground up by the HostNine team and replaces the WHM control panel completely. Customers can host their domains in locations around the globe including London, Australia, Ireland, California, Chicago, Cedar Falls, Texas, Virginia, New York, Florida, and more. Resellers can choose from any of the available cities when adding domains in the control panel. Reseller Central lets resellers spread their accounts across multiple servers, networks, and locations. By using Reseller Central, HostNine can significantly decrease the maximum number of accounts on a single server. Doing so results in faster response times, quicker connections world-wide, and lower CPU and Memory usage on the server.

Mr. Gabler continued, ”With Reseller Central backed with top quality 24/7 100% in-house American support and our server performance increases, we have the leading edge on web hosting companies. Customers sign up with HostNine because they trust us with the security of their website(s). And Reseller Central provides the ability to choose from over ten different locations around the world to host their website(s).”
