Aplus.Net Supports Net Neutrality

San Diego, California - (The Hosting News) - August 31, 2006 - Web host and online presence solutions provider, Aplus.Net, has announced its support of ”net neutrality” provisions to current U.S. legislation regulating telecommunications.

If enacted, the net neutrality guidelines would apply ”common carrier rules” to Internet service providers (ISPs), requiring that all Internet traffic be managed on equal terms and helping ensure that all web content remains equally accessible to all users.

If current legislation reconfiguring the Internet is passed without net neutrality provisions, ISPs will have the ability to give priority or preference to certain websites. In other words, if Company A pays more money than Company B, then Company A’s information will be delivered to your browser much faster than Company B’s.

If larger, more established companies are able to pay for better exposure, then the traditional equal footing that has rewarded true entrepreneurship by allowing new companies to thrive on the Internet will be lost.

Many of today’s most successful Internet companies (Amazon.com, eBay) began as small independent start-ups that thrived because of the Internet’s inherent freedom. Without that freedom, America’s small businesses will suffer.

With more than 75 percent of its customer base consisting of companies with fewer then five employees, Aplus.Net certainly has a stake in the future of America’s small businesses. Itself the product of a successful small business start-up, Aplus.Net is concerned that failure to adopt net neutrality provisions would badly hurt the ability of America’s entrepreneurs to grow through the Internet, and therefore damage the U.S. economy as a whole.

According to the United States Small Business Administration (SBA), ”Small business drives the U.S. economy by providing jobs for over half of the private workforce. Data and research shows that small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all firms, they create more than half of the private non-farm gross domestic product, and they create 60 to 80 percent of the net new jobs … In 2004, there were an estimated 23,974,500 businesses in the U.S. Of the 5,683,700 firms with employees, 5,666,600 were small firms (fewer than 500 employees) … American entrepreneurs are creative and productive, and these numbers prove it.” (Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA): Small Business Profiles for the States and Territories, 2005 Edition. August 4, 2005. Retrieved from http://www.sba.gov/advo/press/05-37.html).

Theo Ivanov, Marketing Director for Aplus.Net commented, ”Aplus.Net has taken this position to defend small business interests on the Internet. We don’t believe ISPs should be able to play favorites with the content they carry. Likewise, consumers shouldn’t have certain content forced on them, while other content is withheld. It creates an unfair playing field, and that’s bad economic policy. Some who oppose net neutrality argue that it’s unwelcome government regulation. We believe that this is one situation where regulation is not only desirable - it’s necessary.”

Since 1995, Aplus.Net has been one of the top ten privately held hosting companies in the United States. Specializing in helping small businesses build a customer base via the Internet, Aplus.Net offers award-winning services that include web hosting and design, dedicated servers, online marketing, e-commerce, domain name registration, and much more. Aplus.Net has been awarded many honors for excellence, including the prestigious CNET Editors’ Choice Award, and has been featured in top U.S. business publications such as Forbes, Entrepreneur, Black Enterprise, and PC Magazine.

Cbeyond Boosts Mobile Services

Atlanta, Georgia - (The Hosting News) - August 31, 2006 - Web hosting and managed integrated VoIP services provider, Cbeyond, has upgraded its BeyondMobile service platform, to include unlimited mobile-to-mobile and nights-and-weekends. Cbeyond launched its BeyondMobile service in January 2006, with two handset options.

BeyondMobile offers small businesses landline, Internet and mobile services with bundling and billing voice minutes. All minutes are bundled together, including long distance, toll-free and mobile. Unused landline minutes can be applied to mobile minutes and vice versa, for free. The sharing of minutes is seamless and requires no intervention from the business owner. BeyondMobile customers can also pool all mobile minutes across employees so there’s no need to juggle different rate plans. In addition, directory service calls are shared between mobile and landline - adding further cost savings.

The full featured LG LX-225 flip-phone and the BlackBerry 7250 were developed to validate small business demand to leverage one service provider for mobile, landline phone and broadband Internet services. More than five percent of the organization’s customer base has already adopted BeyondMobile, increasing Cbeyond’s applications used per customer to 5.2 (as of June 30, 2006).

Pete Ballard, Chief Operating Officer for LAB 601 commented, ”Dealing with cell phones and consumer cell phone providers is a nightmare. By switching to Cbeyond as our mobile service provider, we no longer have the administrative headaches of dealing with multiple providers and multiple rate plans. We are receiving the same level of reliable, value-adding service with an integrated service plan that meets our needs. Cbeyond is helping me focus on my business instead of my cell phone provider.”

The BeyondMobile service from Cbeyond is available within the six markets it serves, as a nationwide service, with no roaming charges. Cbeyond customers can upgrade accounts to add unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling and nights-and-weekends for five dollars a month per user for each feature. The unlimited nights-and-weekends calling plan begins at 7 p.m. Cbeyond customers receive a consolidated bill for all of their landline and mobile communications services and have only one number to call for support.

Brent Cobb, Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Applications for Cbeyond added, ”When our customers requested service upgrades traditionally associated with consumer services like nights-and-weekends and mobile-to-mobile, we delivered. We will continue to incorporate customer feedback into our product development efforts to ensure we meet customer demands.”

Additional service features available for BeyondMobile subscribers include picture mail, Internet browsing, downloadable applications and unlimited text messaging.

Recently, Cbeyond released financial results for the second quarter, reporting a net income of $1.4 million, including non-cash stock-based compensation expense of $1.3 million recorded under SFAS No. 123R, which was adopted during the first quarter of 2006.

Cbeyond is an Atlanta-based managed services provider that delivers integrated packages of voice, mobile and broadband services to small businesses in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston and Los Angeles. Cbeyond offers core communications services like local and long-distance voice, mobile and broadband Internet access along with enhanced applications, including voicemail, email, web hosting, fax-to-email, data backup, file-sharing and VPN. Cbeyond manages its services over a private, 100-percent Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) facilities-based network.

MaximumASP Offers SWsoft Virtuozzo

Louisville, Kentucky - (Website Hosting Directory) - August 31, 2006 - Provider of Windows based web hosting services, MaximumASP, has unveiled a completely new line of Microsoft-based virtual web hosting. MaximumASP’s ”Virtual Environment,” powered by SWsoft’s Virtuozzo, developed to provide increased server virtualization and support.

Virtual Environments are isolated and secure ‘’server instances” that occur on a single physical server, enabling better server utilization while also ensuring that applications do not conflict with each other. Each Virtual Environment performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; VE can be rebooted independently and provides independent root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processor utilization, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files.

Virtual Environment management tools provide unique benefits empowering users to perform many different administrative functions without affecting other “server instances” or requiring any administrative support from MaximumASP staff. The included Power Panel allows access to the server at all times and routine tasks are simplified making server management easier to learn, faster to use than ever before.

Silas Boyle, Managing Partner of MaximumASP commented, ”The Virtual Environment provides a lower priced alternative to our dedicated server offerings without making any compromise on quality.” Each Virtual Environment performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server for its users and applications. Mr. Boyle added. ”VE is an outstanding way for customers to take advantage of many of the benefits of a dedicated server at a lower price point until they are ready to upgrade to a truly dedicated server.”

The light overhead, efficient design, overall completeness and proven performance of Virtual Environment also make it the right virtualization choice for server consolidation, disaster recovery and production servers with live applications and data.

Kurt Daniel, Vice President of Marketing and Alliances, of SWsoft, added, ”SWsoft’s Virtuozzo software delivers powerful server virtualization technology as part of MaximumASP’s Virtual Environment web hosting solution. Virtuozzo’s low overhead architecture will help MaximumASP maximize its resources in the competitive hosting market with capabilities such as automated provisioning and upgrades, and self-management tools that increase server utilization with minimal downtime.”

Virtual Environment Key Benefits include:

  • IsolationProvides isolation between each VE and each customer. No customer can affect or crash other customers on the same server, even when customers have administrative access. Minimizes downtime and eliminates service issues and conflicts between customers.
  • Customer Self - ManagementWeb based interface allows users to backup, restore, manage, recover, repair and reinstall a VE without technical support assistance.
  • Backup and RestoreSelf-administered incremental and scheduled backup capability comes as a part of the feature set. Backups enable quick restoration of each VE without support intervention.
  • SecureThe underlying architecture changes access points on a preset schedule and prevent Denial of Service and other malicious attacks.

MaximumASP, based in Louisville, Kentucky, was founded in 2000 as an outsourcing firm for Microsoft Windows-based hosting services. The company currently hosts more than 44,000 domains for customers in over 60 countries.
