GoDaddy Boosts Web Hosting Security

GoDaddy.com Boosts Web Hosting Security

New TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems Protect Dedicated and Virtual Dedicated Hosting

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (May 31, 2006) – GoDaddy.com® has added another layer of security to its Web hosting, deploying TippingPoint™ Intrusion Prevention Systems to block attacks. GoDaddy.com has put TippingPoint systems in place to protect all dedicated and virtual dedicated hosting servers at no additional cost. An intrusion prevention system is an in-line device that scans traffic and, based on rules, determines whether data packets are legitimate or malicious.

In addition to this valuable security feature, each dedicated and virtual dedicated hosting plan includes free rapid setup, a free SSL certificate and 24/7 customer support, physical security and network monitoring.

“Security is a top priority at Go Daddy,” said Neil Warner, Go Daddy.com chief information security officer. “TippingPoint systems have an established track record of success. Our customers deserve this extra protection for their hosting accounts.”
TippingPoint systems deliver powerful network protection, functioning transparently at gigabit speeds to guard against cyber attacks. TippingPoint’s Digital Vaccine® service updates filters regularly to maintain defense against the latest vulnerabilities, viruses and rogue applications.

“Hackers and automated viruses, spyware, phishing and other attacks are constantly finding new ways around normal security measures in today’s business world,” said Greg Fitzgerald, vice president at TippingPoint, a division of 3Com.

“As a software engineering firm, security is one of our utmost areas of concern,” said Jason Milgram, CEO of Useful Technology™ Corporation. “Dedicated hosting with Go Daddy provides us with the safety measures we need for testing and product development environments to ensure our company’s intellectual property is protected.” For more information on GoDaddy.com’s hosting services, visit

Most sites ready for SSL progress

Despite the enormous success of SSL for securing web traffic, there has been little change in the way that SSL is used for secure HTTP in the ten years since SSL version 3 was introduced. Although it has been around since 1996, most browsers have continued to make connections compatible with the older SSL version 2 protocol. But now the major browser developers are aiming to drop SSL v2 completely; export-grade encryption ciphers are also to be dropped.

EarthLink New Orleans Wi-Fi Approval

I’m very pleased to report that we’ve been approved to build out and support a Wi-Fi network in New Orleans, thanks to a New Orleans City Council ordinance this week. More on the project’s history here.

The network will have two tiers — a free (and ad-free) service at up to 300kbps during the city’s rebuilding efforts, and a paid service at 1mbps up/down. EarthLink will also allow other providers to offer their services over the network, allowing for open access and competition.
