1&1 Internet Reports .ORG Growth

Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania - (Cheap Web Hosting Directory) - June 2, 2008 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, has revealed extensive growth in the number of .ORG domain names registered by its customers worldwide.

The number of 1 and 1 registered .ORG domains increased by over 30 percent over the past 12 months, suggesting an increase in web activity within the non-profit and charity sectors. With the availability of .ORG domains for only $6.99 per year - including a 5 page website, search engine submission and private registration- it has never been easier or more affordable to take a good cause to the web. 1 and 1 joins the .ORG Public Interest Registry (PIR) and its ‘World Voices’ campaign in recognizing the remarkable achievements of the .ORG community.

Oliver Mauss, CEO 1 and 1 Internet Inc. remarked, ”While we have seen pleasing growth in all domain registrations worldwide, perhaps the most satisfying is the huge rise in .ORGs over the past year. Out of 1 and 1’s 10 million domains, some of the most innovative and productive websites are to be found in the .ORG community. Just as the Internet was intended, the web can be an amazing means for smaller groups to make a difference, and 1 and 1 will continue to work hard to help the non-profit sector use the Internet to maximum effect.”

While web adoption is most often analyzed in terms of small businesses and personal publishing activity, 1 and 1 reveals evidence to show that small scale non-profit and social activism websites are making impressive gains on the Internet. Between December of 2006, and December of 2007, the world’s largest web host registered over 70,000 .ORG domains, seeing a unique and impressive increase of 31 percent.

The availability of affordable, ‘out of the box’ web solutions has no doubt helped to accelerate the progress of non-profit, charity and social activism websites. In 2008, it can take as little as 30 minutes and a few clicks ‘to give a voice’ to a cause or activity, with the average user today having tools at their fingertips previously reserved to large organizations. For example, a $6.99 per year .ORG domain purchased from 1 and 1 includes a 5 page WebsiteBuilder website, custom email addresses and search engine submission - meaning a quality web presence for only a few dollars.

An example of an effective 1 and 1 registered .ORG website is the local New Jersey firefighter’s association website, www.NJBCFA.org. The website provides a community with information and increased support for the firefighters. Their .ORG domain gives the organization an internationally recognized emblem of legitimacy and non-profit status.

Ray DiPatri of the N.J.B.C.F.A noted, ”Our website has been vital for building support, sharing information and recruiting volunteers. This Firefighter Association has been meeting for over 90 years and our website will help recruit new and younger members. The .ORG domain name is an extension of our non-profit identity and conveys the spirit of volunteerism: doing without financial reward.” The N.J.B.C.F.A. website is a good example of how the .ORG community has used the web to connect a community and support a good cause.

Alexa Raad, CEO Public Interest Registry, added, ”The contributions of the .ORG community in recent years are amazing. They have not only helped to galvanize interest in various causes, but by adopting trends such as social networking, have given individuals unprecedented means to inspire, educate, collaborate, and ultimately change the world as we know it.”

The .ORG domain is a highly effective web identity because it transcends geographical boundaries and socio-political labels. .ORG is clearly a powerful tool in attracting support and participation for non-profit initiatives. The growth of 1 and 1 .ORG registrations is significant in demonstrating a surge in the number of people and causes that are today empowered by the web. The availability of .ORG is representative of the original concept of the Internet - egalitarian and intended for honorable enterprises.

Ms. Raad added, ”The ‘World Voices’ Campaign is designed to highlight the contributions of the .ORG community as well as position .ORG, The Public Interest Registry, as a passionate steward of the namespace and a fierce advocate for the rights of its community.”

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of 1 and 1 Internet Inc. noted, ”Adoption of the APS standard will provide a sizeable new business opportunity for 1 and 1 and for the entire web hosting and software industries worldwide. The standard is open to everyone and will provide exciting new sales channels for hosting providers as well as other Internet service providers (ISPs). Our customers and ISVs will benefit from the expected growth of new APS-compliant applications.”

Parallels, which maintains the APS standard, made the announcement with 1 and 1 today at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. The APS standard was developed by Parallels to simplify integration of web applications into hosting environments for delivery as software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions. 1 and 1’s new service includes open source applications, such as Joomla, PostNuke, PhpBB, SMF, Serendipity, Moodle, MediaWiki, Mantis, phpMyVisites, PHProject and WebCalendar. APS simplifies installation and update management of web applications, and removes the need for downloads, registrations and passwords.

1 and 1’s web hosting customers in Germany also get 1 and 1’s Click-n-Build control panel for adding and removing web applications. 1 and 1 deployed APS-certified applications to its U.S. customers in June 2007.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels commented, ”With the Parallels Open Platform and the APS standard, we are providing a unified, open technology platform to help software vendors and service providers fully take advantage of SaaS. 1 and 1 Internet is leading the way to SaaS for millions of hosting customers and opening the channel for ISVs to reach the growing SoHo and SMB markets.”

The Parallels Open Platform enables SaaS with Parallels virtualization and automation technology through integration with a wide range of third-party applications and systems. 1 and 1 Engages NetIron XMR Multi-Service

Santa Clara, California - (The Hosting News) - January 24, 2008 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, is supported by Foundry Networks, Inc., with its installation of the NetIron XMR 4000 backbone routers, to power the network for scalable growth and allow for significant capital and operating expenditure savings.

During the planning phase of this major backbone upgrade, 1 and 1 chose Foundry’s NetIron XMR 4000 for its port density and performance, while also offering compelling economies of scale and long-term investment protection. 1 and 1 initially installed the NetIron XMR routers in the European part of the backbone and after successful results expanded the installation to the Kansas City Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).

Due to the large scale, 1 and 1 is running its own transcontinental Wide Area Network (WAN) - which differentiates the company from other web hosting firms. On the equipment side, backbone routers of multiple vendors are used to ensure maximum redundancy, reliability and security. On the network structure side, two independent ring systems in Europe and the United States are connected redundantly via two transatlantic connections and grant access to more than 400 other providers via 700 BGP routing sessions.

To meet consumer and business customers’ expectations for fast and reliable services, 1 and 1 is continuously optimizing its network. To preserve market leadership and provide next generation services, the European WAN network, which originally consisted of a SDH topology with a bandwidth of 2.5 GB/sec, is now upgraded to connections consisting of single or even multiple 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) channels. This ensures that 1 and 1’s future network increases as web hosting continues to grow.

The new Lenexa Data Center has the capacity for more than 40,000 servers and enables 1 and 1 to support rapid customer growth in the United States. The data center is linked to 1 and 1’s own 10GbE Kansas City metro ring to continue offering a high level of product and providing more than 99.99% uptime. The addition of Foundry routers gives 1 and 1 hosting users the advantage of heightened security and the next generation of technology enabling industry leading performance.

1 and 1 Internet has reported extensive growth as one of the world’s largest and fastest growing web hosts. According to independent studies, 1 and 1 hosts almost 2.6 million active web sites and has 9.1 million domains registered. 1 and 1’s global community is 7.07 million customers strong. Expanding globally, 1 and 1 is already one of the United States’ top five service providers. The data transfer rate of business and consumer Web sites hosted is nearly 6.5 petabytes per month.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman for 1 and 1 Internet remarked, ”The reason for the increasing popularity of 1 and 1’s web hosting service, besides affordability, is the industry leading performance and reliability. To maintain this advantage, we are constantly implementing technologies to improve our customers’ experience. After thoroughly analyzing competing products, we are convinced that Foundry’s NetIron XMR Series routers provide us with the upgrade path and feature set that allows future bandwidth growth and a high level of performance.”

Ken Cheng, Vice President and General Manager for Foundry’s High-End and Service Provider Systems Business Unit noted, ”We are very pleased that 1 and 1 Internet has chosen the NetIron XMR backbone routers to power their global Web hosting and service provider network. Performance, reliability and scalability are crucial elements in accommodating future network expansion. Using Foundry’s class-leading routers, 1 and 1 is well prepared for this growth and poised to take advantage of market opportunities as the world’s largest and fastest growing Web host.”

Foundry Networks, Inc. is a provider of high-performance enterprise and service provider switching, routing, security and web traffic management solutions, including Layer 2/3 LAN switches, Layer 3 Backbone switches, Layer 4-7 application switches, wireless LAN and access points, metro and core routers. Foundry’s customers include the world’s premier ISPs, metro service providers, and enterprises, including e-commerce sites, universities, entertainment, health and wellness, government, financial and manufacturing companies.

1 and 1 Internet Inc. is a subsidiary of United Internet, a profitable public company with a market cap of $4 billion and over 3,500 employees. 1 and 1 was established in 1992 and hosts more than 9 million domain names, while more than 40,000 servers run on the company’s five data centers. 1 and 1’s global community is over 6.8 million customer contracts strong. The company’s U.S. headquarters is located in Chesterbrook, PA. 1 and 1 features an array of services, from instant domain packages to all-inclusive shared hosting plans, dedicated servers and ready-to-run eShops. 1 and 1 is a Microsoft Joint Development Partner, and works with other paramount companies such as Google, Plesk, Symantec, and HP/Compaq.

Network Expanded, at 1&1 Internet

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - (Website Hosting Directory) - January 22, 2008 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, has completed a comprehensive extension of its wide area network (WAN), with an overall bandwidth of more than 120 Gigabit per second.

For the first time, 1 and 1 is connected directly to a large Internet Exchange point outside of Europe at Equinix in Chicago. The development means that the external connectivity of the world’s largest web host has tripled over the past twelve months.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of the Board, 1 and 1 Internet Inc., noted, ”With the upgrade of our Internet bandwidth, our millions of web hosting customers in Europe and the U.S. can be sure that their content will reach Internet users worldwide even faster and more reliably. As a result of multimedia applications like video streaming, the demand for bandwidth has grown enormously over the last few years.”

The data volume transmitted from 1 and 1’s data centers has in fact nearly doubled over the past year from 3,500 Terabytes (3.5 million Gigabytes) in January 2007, to 6,500 Terabytes in December 2007.

Mr. Gauger added, ”The continuous upgrade of 1 and 1’s data network shows that despite pessimistic forecasts from some, the boundaries of Internet growth have not yet been reached.”

In November, U.S. research company, Nemertes, warned in a well known study that Internet infrastructure might no longer supply the growing demands of private and business users over the next 3 to 5 years. With its latest network upgrades and further measures planned for 2008, 1 and 1 feels well prepared for continuously growing demand.

Over the next year, 1 and 1 will focus on extending its U.S. network. In Chicago, at Equinix, 1 and 1 is for the first time connected to a large Internet Exchange point outside of Europe. In March, 1 and 1 will more than double the external connectivity of its Lenexa, Kansas data center. With more than 600,000 customers, 1 and 1 is presently the fifth-largest web host in the U.S. market.

Besides the upgrade of its wide area network, 1 and 1 has also made changes to its underlying technology. Instead of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy), now Ethernet technology - well-known from corporate and home networks - is being utilized.

Mr. Gauger added, ”Ethernet can be handled more easily, and by switching to powerful routers from U.S. based manufacturer Foundry Networks, we can even save money. 1 and 1 benefits from an additional cost saving potential through the network extension, as data streams can be distributed optimally through new peerings and routing alternatives.”

1 and 1 was established in 1988 and hosts more than 9 million domain names, with over 7 million customer contracts, 9 million domains and 81 million email accounts.

1&1 Funambol Collaboration

1&1 and Funambol Collaborate on New Push Email and PIM Sync Solution for Mass Market

Integration with Open-Xchange collaboration software illustrates how open source enables service providers to offer new mobile services

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., October 16, 2007 – Funambol, the leading provider of Mobile 2.0 messaging solutions powered by open source, today announced it is working with 1&1, the world’s largest web hoster, on a new push email and PIM (personal information management, e.g., contacts and calendar) synchronization solution for the mass market.

The solution uses OpenXchange for collaboration capabilities, including contact and calendar management. 1&1 chose Funambol due to its mobile email & PIM feature set for the mass market, source code transparency and low cost that is enabled by open source. By using Funambol software, 1&1 expects to differentiate its offerings and mobilize its massive email user base as well as attract new customers for its affordable email services.

“1&1 is leading the way into a new mobile market in which many more people can receive compelling mobile services such as push email at a fraction of the cost of proprietary alternatives,” said Fabrizio Capobianco, Funambol CEO. “We are pleased to work with 1&1 as this will set a precedent for how service providers can utilize open source to address a major new portion of the market and provide profitable mobile services.”

“After thoroughly researching the market for push email services, Funambol proved to offer the solution we were looking for.  We believe in the success of Software as a Service and Funambol’s open source-based solution delivers on both our business and customer needs,” said Andreas Gauger, 1&1 chairman of the board. “We look forward to making this mobile service available to our customers soon.”

“Business users and consumers want easy-to use mobile messaging and collaboration capabilities such as Personal Information Management services, on all the devices they use, anywhere, anytime at a reasonable cost,” said Gerald Labie, CEO of Open-Xchange. The market potential for mobile SaaS solutions is tremendous. Our three way partnership is a major step forward in meeting this need.”

The 1&1 and Funambol push email service points to a trend in the industry – service providers such as 1&1 are choosing open source-based software to provide mobile services. Earlier this year, Funambol announced an agreement with EarthLink and anticipates more will follow. These moves are expected to generate a wide range of new low-cost mobile email and related services for the mass market. Funambol has been leading the evolution of this market with its mobile open source software since 2001. The new 1&1 mobility service is expected to launch within a few months.

“We project mobile email adoption by consumers to rapidly accelerate over the next few years. This service by 1&1 and Funambol is just the first of many similar offerings to come,” said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., vice president and chief analyst, Mobile & Wireless, Frost & Sullivan. “This deployment of mobile email for millions of users helps legitimize open source as a realistic alternative to proprietary solutions.”

1&1 Internet Unveils Web Design Solution

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - (Website Hosting Directory) - June 21, 2007 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, has debuted its new Click-n-Build open source application, developed for web design, in a new platform for hosting packages.

1 and 1 Click-n-Build, bundled with web hosting from $4.99/a month, is designed to deliver powerful open source web building tools, fully developed, installed and ready to apply within a few clicks. The service provides applications including phpBB, Joomla!, TikiWiki, Noah’s Classifieds, Moodle, Mantis and phpAdsNew.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of the Board, 1 and 1 Internet commented, ”With Click-n- Build, we are proud to offer a significant advancement to web hosting. Open source software has always promised great results but has until now eluded a great number of non-technical users. Our new platform delivers great software within a few clicks, and allows every type of user the full benefit whilst 1&1 handles all of the technicalities.”

The platform is the first solution for installing powerful open source tools within a few clicks, with automatic version updates, security patches and with no intrusion from ads. 1 and 1 Click-n-Build is based upon Application Packaging Standard (APS), the first definitive standard for the integration of open source applications within a hosting environment. APS has been developed by SWSoft, the global leader in server virtualization and automation software. The solution provides 1and 1 web hosting users with one easy-to-use interface for adding, configuring and removing web applications within their web hosting. Whilst open source software is freely available on the Internet, most applications still require significant time and skill to install and maintain.

According to the company, 1 and 1 Click-n-Build adds value to each application by fully managing the installation, latest version updates and automatic security patches, by removing the need for downloads, registrations and passwords, and frees the user to concentrate on leveraging their software. 1 and 1’s service initially comprises of a choice of approximately 20 applications, with more to follow. 1and 1 Click-n-Build is bundled with 1and 1 web hosting and Managed Server packages. The 1and 1 Home package, from $4,99/a month, includes 2 applications, the 1 and 1 Business package, from $9.99/a month, features 5 applications and the 1and 1 Developer package, priced from $19.99/a month, benefits from 10 applications.

In the near future, additional applications for 1 and 1 Click-n-Build will be available for order at any time at the price of $1.99/a month, which is payable with the user’s regular hosting charges. Applications offered include phpBB — one of the most popular Bulletin Board software applications. Such discussion boards are an ideal way to share information with website visitors and foster online communities. The software is a valuable feature for both home and business websites. Joomla!, an award- winning Content Management System (CMS), is also on offer.

The application can deliver a professional looking website through adding content, images and product catalogues. For the more advanced user, TikiWiki is offered as a useful collaboration site based on the same editing software as Wikipedia. Users can update and amend articles with ease to maintain an up-to-date online knowledge base. Advertisement management applications for 1 and 1 Click-n-Build include Noah’s Classifieds and phpAdsNew for banner management. Furthermore, Moodle provides a valuable e-learning application, useful for a range of online learning projects.

Other well-known software available through 1 and 1’s Click-n-Build includes customer service focused Mantis, and groupware applications EGroupWare, WebCalender and phProjekt. Whilst the suite of applications will appeal to a broad range of users, 1 and 1 Click-n-Build is of particular value to home users and SMEs. As well as saving them a lot of time, users also have the peace of mind that their software remains the most secure version available.

Mr. Gauger added, ”As the web becomes ever more competitive, these applications will enable 1 and 1 customer websites to remain dynamic and competitive.”

1 and 1 was established in 1992 and hosts more than 7 million domain names, while 40,000 servers run on the company’s four state-of-the-art data centers, featuring Juniper and Cisco routers. 1 and 1’s global service community includes over 6 million customer contracts. The company’s U.S. headquarters is located in Chesterbrook, PA. Internet’s global community includes 6,000 employees and a market cap of $4 billion.

Dedicated, VPS, Offered by 1&1 Internet

Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania - (The Hosting News) - January 31, 2007 - Webhosting company, and subsidiary of United Internet, 1 and 1 Internet, has unveiled the operation of its new Lenexa, Kansas Data Center, along with a new line of dedicated and Virtual Private Servers (VPS), housed in the central U.S., for a low latency connection.

In addition, the center has fiber-optic connectivity to several ISPs, high redundant capacity and is capable of routing thousands of Terabytes per month without any data jams. These, and other, features enable 1 and 1 to guarantee its network a more than 99.99 percent uptime. In addition, security features such as redundant steel-reinforced walls, backup diesel generators; custom FE-25 protection and much more ensure that the servers will continue to operate regardless of external conditions. The 1 and 1 data center’s connectivity and security capacities make it possible for the company to unveil its new dedicated and VPS line and grow past its current 38,000 global servers.

1 and 1’s dedicated servers include dual and quad core servers, all fully-equipped with the latest hardware from AMD. Customers can select a root, managed or Windows server to determine the dedicated server solution that best suits their needs. Other features include up to 8 GB RAM and a Plesk 100 license.

The VPS are an ideal server solution for those who have outgrown a shared hosting plan but aren’t quite ready for a dedicated server. 1 and 1 VPS are partitioned servers that enable each partition to function as a virtual server dedicated to a single customer. These servers are partitioned in such a way that each server operates almost independently of the other accounts that share the server.

Andreas Gauger, Chairman of 1 and 1 Internet remarked, ”Since 1 and 1 sold out servers in October 2006, this new line of servers is a welcome and much requested addition. While the dedicated servers continue to be ideal for the professional that wants exclusive control and maximum power, the VPS solutions will appeal to those who seek greater control than with a regular hosting plan and need the flexibility of a root server to install their own security and software. In this regard, our new range of VPS is filling the gap between the full power of a dedicated server and the 1 and 1 shared hosting plans.”

There are three choices for the 1 and 1 VPS: VPS Level I is $29 per month, includes 10 GB hard disc space, one domain and 500 GB monthly transfer volume; VPS Level II is $39 per month and includes 20 GB, hard disc space, a domain, SSL certificate and 1,000GB of monthly transfer volume and: VPS Level III at $59 per month includes 50 GB hard disc space, SSL certificate, one domain and 2,000 GB monthly transfer volume. Dedicated server packages starting from $99 per month are considerably less in price than the nearest competitor. All 1 and 1 shared hosting and VPS packages come with a 90-day money back guarantee.

1 and 1 was established in 1992 and hosts more than 7 million domain names, while 38,000 servers run on the company’s four state-of-the-art data centers, featuring Juniper and Cisco routers. 1 and 1’s global service community includes over 6 million customer contracts. The company’s U.S. headquarters is located in Chesterbrook, PA. Internet’s global community includes 6,000 employees and a market cap of $4 billion.
