  6. Glossary

The very important question of how to best choose a web host has been written about quite a bit. Most agree that there are some basic considerations that those seeking a web hosting provider will want to have in mind. In general, consumers will want to consider the following key points:

  • Uptime - How long does the server stay running? 99% or higher uptime is considered the norm.
  • Basic technology offering - What server, software, network, security, etc.
  • Web site administration tools - How does the customer make changes to the site?
  • Technical support  - What are the venues for contacting customer service, the hours of operation and satisfaction levels?
  • Features - What is the server space and bandwidth offered?
  • Price - Does the price compare with other similar offerings from other hosts?

These are not offered in any particular order and nor are these criteria exhaustive, but merely serve as a guideline for choosing a web hosting provider appropriate for the buyer.
