Truck Driver Crashes into Rackspace Datacenter

Posted in Blog, Funny, Internet on November 13th, 2007 by whf – 2 Comments

datacenter-truck.jpg

Could this be a new hacker tool?

Do you remember the power mishap in July that brought down 365 Main, the San Francisco datacenter? A  similar incident took place at Rackspace, a Dallas, Texas Web host which serves several local companies.

I doubt that I will ever get around to building my own datacenter, but if I do, it will not be close to a highway. Yep, the security implications that this event brings to the surface are disturbing.

Now what?

How about a new cPanel feature: Truck Redirect

Set up a Web Server Cluster in 5 Easy Steps

Posted in Blog, Internet on August 27th, 2007 by whf – Be the first to comment

There is a lot of talk about server clustering these days. Not that I understand this or that it is actually easy for us all, but I thought this tutorial from the folks at IBM was interesting. It shows the thinking that goes into constructing an Apache Web server cluster that spans multiple physical or virtual Linux servers in 5 easy steps with Linux Virtual Server and Heartbeat v2.

How Social Media Will Change the World

Posted in Blog, Internet on May 11th, 2007 by whf – 1 Comment

digg-image.gifI suppose most anyone would be able to notice the trend in the number of social media sites such as Digg coming online. Have you spent any time on these sites? And for the site builders out there, would you undertake building a social media site rather than a static site or blog based site?

With a very simple concept, Digg.com has changed the fundamental nature of the news media and how millions of people access information. Digg (and its fellow social media sites) democratized the media…Now, argue about whether this is good or bad, but it’s now a fact of life.

What would a Yahoo/Microsoft Merger Look Like

Posted in Blog, Internet on May 4th, 2007 by whf – 1 Comment

According to a Forbes article, Microsoft supposedly wants to aquire Yahoo for a very large amount of money (more digits than my calculator can compute). This would be the largest aquisition in IT history, right?

Software maker Microsoft Corp. asked search engine operator Yahoo Inc. to re-enter formal negotiations for an acquisition that could be worth $50 billion, the New York Post reported on Friday.

What would the result look like? The first thing that comes to mind is the name? Would it be called YahooSoft or MicroHoo? And of course, would the new company then be able to beat Google in search?

5 Things You Don't Know About the Web Hosting Finds Guy Behind the Scenes

Posted in Blog, Internet on April 23rd, 2007 by whf – 1 Comment

Many months ago I was tagged by Mitch of the Web Hosting Show to reveal 5 things you don’t know about me. Who am I? I am still trying to figure that one out, but I’ll be glad to share what I know. However, I will still try and preserve the mystique around the true identity of the Web Hosting Finds Guy Behind the Scenes. Don’t worry, I’m not famous, but hey, let’s create some suspense!

First, my apologies Mitch, for taking so long. I have actually had this in my WordPress draft for many months. This year has been insane and I have finally gotten a handle on my work load (now we’ll find out if the boss actually reads these posts).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mitch Keeler, I’ll give you a quick summary. Mitch is the guy who makes the potentially boring web hosting industry interesting, funny and entertaining. Nuff said.

Okay here goes…

  • I am an avid online pc gamer. I bought my first pc back in the 90’s for word processing when I was still hanging onto the hope of being a fiction writer. It wasn’t long before I discovered flight sims and first person shooters. I wrote pc game reviews for online gaming sites for a while, which was kind of cool but didn’t pay well. Anyway, I think I put in about an hour each night fragging away my competitors in Half-Life 2. It’s a major stress reliever and it’s kind of interesting to see gaming technology evolve and become more interesting over the years.
  • In case anyone has mistaken my enthusiasm for skill, I am by no means an expert on web hosting. I have just had a lot of bad web hosts along the way that forced me to ask questions and learn what is important in web hosting and what is not.
  • I love spicey food, especially the asian varieties: Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian, etc. I can usually take any degree of heat that is thrown at me. I met my match when I asked a Thai restaurant for 20 star curry. The cook actually came out to see if I was still alive.
  • I worked in the billing trouble support department for a disturbing number of years for a (now defunct) major telecommunications company. Why do I mention this? I want you to know that when I speak of boredom in the corporate world, I speak from experience and great, great authority.
  • I have fantasies about working in one of those windowless, air-conditioned datacenters. There are people in there and they are getting paid to do something right? I have a theory that maybe they are playing pc games.
  • If you guys below haven’t already done this and want to continue the 5 things meme, please do:

If Ancient Rome had the Internet

All networks lead to the Roman datacenter. This might be interesting to any of you who watched the HBO Rome series which ended last night. Hilarious list of parallels between ancient rome and the modern-day web.

  • Attila the Hun has his own MySpace page.
  • But at least Caesar’s “Et tu Brute?” comment is available as a free ringtone download.
  • Hannibal blogs his way across the Alps with posts like, “Whoops, lost another elephant today.”

New Website Lost By Hosting Company

Posted in Blog, Internet on March 5th, 2007 by whf – Be the first to comment

This bit of news might better be filed under horror stories or offbeat. According to one site owner, within two days of launching and announcing an ecommerce website featuring high-end products, the hosting company *lost* it due to an employee error.

According to my host, the server company overrode the C drive for the 60+ websites, then finalized the loss by deleting the backup secondary drive.

What’s the moral of this story? Backup, backup, backup!

    Is Yahoo Selling Search Results?

Posted in Blog, Internet on February 21st, 2007 by whf – 1 Comment

yahoo selling search results?According to a thread in SEO Refugee SEO Forum and a post at SEO-Scoop, Yahoo appears to be including pay-per-click ads in organic search listings. To the casual observer, the ads are indistinguishable from regular listings leading some to question whether Yahoo! is selling rankings in their search engine result pages (SERPs) as well.

Looking at the actual search result from a search from a Yahoo Search for “ontario massage therapy” in the number 9 spot today, it does appear the title tag is different and there is no cache.

One digg.com user comments: “Wow…. is it the year 2000 again?”

    1 and 1 Google Search

Posted in Blog, Internet on January 12th, 2007 by whf – 1 Comment

1-and-1-google Want to find a good web hosting company using Google search technology or do you need an answer to an age old mathematical question? I get bored sometimes and just instinctively type words into Google search (c’mon, I know you do to). I was hoping to see the Web Hosting Finds site come up on the first page for the phrase “1 and 1.” To my suprise, Google gave me the literal answer to my query: “2.” I had read about this function in Google search a long time ago but had never actually seen it appear naturally. Math was not my shining subject in school, but I do know that 1 and 1 = 2! I guess it all depends on how you spell 1 & 1.

    ReviewMe Review

Posted in Blog, Internet on December 13th, 2006 by whf – 4 Comments

    My Experience with ReviewMe

ReviewMe ReviewMe is an online advertising service that pays bloggers to write about advertiser products. Although an advertiser pays for a blog post, there is no guarantee that the review will be positive. I can verify this from experience.

The first review that a ReviewMe blogger wrote for one of my sites was negative, to put it lightly. I was told by ReviewMe support that it had been “canceled either by the blogger or because the offer was not completed within the 48 hour time limit.” However, I discovered later that the review had in fact been published on another site, which looked to have been scraped in via RSS feed. The best way I can think of to describe the post would be to form a hybrid word from these: diatribe, invective, jeremiad, tirade, vituperation. And after reading my rejected ReviewMe review, I discovered all sorts of interesting things about my web site that I hadn’t known. The reviewer pointed out a few errors on the site for which I honestly was grateful to learn and correct. Other statements were, if not inaccurate, certainly in bad taste. This of course, seemed a reflection on the maturity level of the individual blogger rather than ReviewMe. I do question ReviewMe’s screening tactics because I have a friend whose blog was rejected by ReviewMe, even though in my opinion, her blog is of higher quality than many of the reviewer blogs I saw listed in ReviewMe. Perhaps that will change over time, I thought. The company is new, after all.

Call me what you want for giving them another try, but I did. I asked a second blogger to review my site. I really liked her site and it seemed to have good organic search standing. This second review was really not that exciting but it did do a good job of explaining my product/site and its purpose. I was happy to see a big fat organic link to my site in the article. Or was it an organic link to my site? To my dismay, the reviewed URI was canonically a different URI than the one I listed in my account and certainly for SEO purposes was incorrect. Despite the fact that a visitor technically landed on my site, it was not the page I wanted them to land on or rather, that I had paid for them to land on. Moreover, the URI was not the URI I had listed in my account for review. When I politely asked that the link be corrected, I was told that RevewMe “cannot make changes to the blogger’s review.” I followed up and asked ReviewMe to please credit me for the error. It has been a week after my last follow up email and I have not heard back from them. I may still decide to cancel the transaction with my credit card company, but I don’t plan to at this point.

So, then I thought, why don’t I just contact the blogger directly and explain my situation and ask that the link be corrected? It would ony take a few seconds for anyone with even mild traces of HTML resident in their bloodstream to fix the link. The blogger would be glad to help out an advertiser, wouldn’t she? Unbelievably, there was no method of contact available at the blog who published this wonderful review.

I don’t mind that my review is disclosed as a paid review. In fact, I like that aspect of ReviewMe. But, the blogger who reviewed my product placed the words “Sponsored Review” in the title and URI. Kind of blatant and could have been done with a bit more modesty.

Some ReviewMe bloggers are using the Google “nofollow” attribute in their review links so that “they’re not buying my link juice along with their review” as this blogger states (I don’t suppose I will use the nofollow attribute on my link to him).

Famed TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington states sums up his review of this better PayPerPost service in his The PayPerPost Virus Spreads post:

While we applaud the fact that ReviewMe requires disclosure and prohibits advertisers from requiring a positive post, we still think the very act of paying bloggers to write about a product is a very bad idea. Frankly, we’re not happy that one of our sponsors has launched this type of service, and we’ve notified them that we will not allow promotion of ReviewMe through TechCrunch.

Out of curiosity, I spent some time looking around ReviewMe.com for an “About Us” page. It ain’t there at the time of this writing. I think that it might serve ReviewMe’s interest to post this type of information, especially since they have their WHOIS record iprivately registered.

I really wanted ReviewMe to work and perhaps it will one day. Right now, it’s not. I hope to hear back from ReviewMe support with a solution to the problems I’ve encountered. I understand that Patrick Gavin of TextLinkAds is behind ReviewMe. I have listened to interviews Patrick’s podcast interviews and have followed his work with TextLinkAds since it’s inception years ago. I certainly respect the man and hope the best for him.

If you have had an experience with ReviewMe, positive/negative/neutral, please comment.

    Hosting Hazards

lunartics.jpgAmy Armitage, one of the bloggers at the LunarPages blog, “Lunartics”, has a skill set in Web Hosting that “ranges from Forum Administration, Technical Support to Basic System Admin, Management, Sales, Marketing, Affiliate Programs and Business Development.” So I’d say she is qualified to say something about the potential hazards that people run into when they sign up for web hosting. I particularly like the questions she says to ask before joining a host provider. Amy is also fearless enough to tread into the subject of overselling (shhh…).

Navigating the World Wide Web in search of the perfect web host can be an incredibly discouraging experience. I know… I’ve been there.

You can propose your own Super Bowl ad idea for the best NFL Super Bowl commercial ever. The winning pitch may be produced, and you and your friends will be flown to watch the Super Bowl, of course. Check out the video pitch about the Super Bowl 41 TV Ad by ESPN’s Rich Eisen. Thanks to Harold for sending this along. Good luck ad execs.

    CNET Hosting Reviews

Posted in Blog, Internet on November 13th, 2006 by whf – 1 Comment

As one who has the habit of meandering through the server referral logs, I noticed that visitors are searching for the phrase CNET Hosting and landing at Web Hosting Finds. I am a fan of CNET consumer content: price comparisons, reviews and guides. CNET.com does not offer web hosting services as far as I know. However, CNET does offer detailed reviews and research data for use in making decisions about web hosting. These reviews come from their own (I assume paid) CNET listings and do not represent an objective compilation of web hosting reviews.

    Hosting Hoopla Closes

Posted in Blog, Internet on November 7th, 2006 by whf – 3 Comments

It’s a sad day for web hosting news consumers. The news aggregation site for the web hosting niche, HostingHoopla.com has closed. Several days ago I had expected to visit Hosting Hoopla and get the latest news. Instead, I read…

Due to lack of intrest [sic], popularity and time – Hosting Hoopla has shut it’s doors.

Please, feel free to check out the Web Hosting Show or any of my other projects. Thanks!

Hosting Hoopla is believed to have been the first Web hosting RSS, news and link reader. The site, run by web hosting industry personality, Mitch Keeler of the Web Hosting Show podcast, aggregated news from many leading web hosting news sources (including, at times, WebHostingFinds.com) into one easy-to-read page. The main page featured sites like TopHosts.com, WebHosting.Info, the WHIR, WebHostGear, NetCraft and several leading web hosting forums.

Like many of us, Mitch oberves the dullness and boredom surrounding many web hosting news and information sites and wanted to generate some buzz and excitement around the hosting niche (I actually believe he is accomplishing this through the Web Hosting Show). Chalk up another victory for the “nerds in white buttoned up shirts and black ties,” who seem to be behind the web hosting industry. We’ll never be rid of them, it seems.

I tested the Media Convert free online converter for sound, text and video files the other day and I simply love it! I was able to convert some mp4 files I had lying on my desktop for a while, files I really wanted to listen to in my mp3 player, but couldn’t. If half of these conversion types work, then Media Convert is a great tool and of course, it’s free and no risk and no downloading involved. Take it or leave it, I suppose.

    MsDewey Search Engine

Posted in Blog, Funny, Internet on October 18th, 2006 by whf – 4 Comments

Ms. Dewey (MsDewey.com) is a new, interactive, Flash based search engine. To assist you in your search, the website is hosted by smoking hot model/actress/vocalist, Janina Gavankar, who is guest starring in upcoming new episodes of Showtime’s “The L Word”. See what she and the site are capable of by typing into the search field, or just leave it blank and watch. Kind of entertaining, but perhaps lacking as a practical search tool. Other than Ms Dewey, the site doesn’t identify the minds and bodies behind the search engine. The search results appear to come from Microsoft Live Search. The domain is registered to EVB of San Francisco.

Another service similar to TextOnImage blogged about blogged about last week is Gaxed.com, a free image creator service from Philipp Lenssen of Stuttgart, Germany that lets you put your text on several different types of images – snow, the sky, a building, etc. Philipp Lenssen’s blog (outer-court.com) is quite active. I like the user friendliness of gaxed. Pics are quite stretched on my large rez monitor and the number of pics available numbers about ten.

I think I ended up spent more time creating an image with the tool than I would have if I had used graphics editor though.
